whats your average weekly FOOD shop

I was listening to a radio interview with a few single mums that were saying that they are going to be put on the breadline by the new benefits coming out..

Now that isnt what I want to discuss.. but they were saying that they cant afford to buy proper food for their children and one say she only has £50pw for food... so its all ready meals..

Now sorry if I am wrong but I was thinking that I eat VERY well.. but my average shopping for 4 ( more at weekends) is £65 but that includes toiletries and everything and pet food.

So I went through my last few shopping trips and worked out that on average I spend £40pw on food and £10 throughout the week on bread and milk etc...

So whats your average weekly food shop.

Mine is for 1 adult and 3 kids, and add two at the weekends.

I do however buy my veg and meat from local farmers yard... and my eggs

About £40 a week icluding stuff like coffee ect and that is all fresh meat and fruit and veg. But it lasts longer as i make stuff and freeze half. Surely ready meals are more expensive

We spend around £100/ week - but that's food shopping and other s'mkt shopping, such as nappies, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc. That's for 6 of us. No ready meals. Lots of fresh f&v, f/r eggs, f/r chicken, good quality steak and lean minced steak etc

About £80 a week. Mainly get fresh veg and fresh meat, then some treats from supermarket. my treats are extortionate tho cos I like to snack on nice cold cuts and ready cooked chicken, which can really add to your bill.

It's entirely possible to do a weekly shop and have enough in to feed everyone for about £40-50 tho. Just by going to the butchers and greengrocers separately, you save so much. And it's much much cheaper than buying loads of nasty ready meals.

well I was quite shocked.. even the news bit on the radio about it had me going "you what".. the mum saying she has to buy her child ready meals as she cant afford it.. I often make up batches of stuff and freeze it.. If I brought all my kids and myself ready meals.. ONE they would be hungry in about an hour.. and two would cost me £4 a meal.. but with no real nutritional value.

I just asked my mate and she spends £120 a week and her family is same size as mine lol

It depends on what we buy.

If we buy fresh fruit and veg, fresh bread and milk and dairy products we obviously eat those sooner than if we stock up on tinned, dried and frozen foods which last longer and the price varies for fresh food.

So anywhere between 40 quid up to about sixty or more.

the trouble is she doesnt know how to shop,or cook for that matter, by the sounds of it,its easily possible to cook tasty and nutritional meals for a lot less than she spends on ready meals,methinks she likes the sound of the microwave too much to be bothered cooking

we spend 50 a week but that is for 6 kids and 2 adults i only buy fresh food and shop around to get best buys and make every thing from scratch that even includes specialist food as one kid lactose intolerant xx

oh forgot to say thats cooking from scratch mostly but we do have the very odd ready meal when seriously pushed for time or sometimes on a saturday as i'm usually too shattered to even want to think about cooking

when my 3 girls were at home we spent around £300 pre month but like you say that was every thing and with four women in the house you can only geuse at the amount of toiletrys we went through, we made most meals from scratch and froze any left overs and mum and i would have them if the girls were out ,now with two daughters flown the next our shoping bill has halved ,and so has the phone bill he he

i spend about £100 a week on shopping, i do buy everything together tho, and thats for 3 adults and 1 child, i have 3 kids but two are 18 and 20 so im not feeding 3 kids if that makes sence, out of that i provide a packed lunch every week day for each of them, and food for my dog and cats so i dont actually think around a £100 a week is bad

well i had 4 but now i have 8 and some of the friends too a times.. lol xx thay live here most night .. its nice to get a takeway or meal out now ad again , lol xx

During the summer months when we are both at home....around £125 a week average for Two of us....during the season when I am on my own Four or Five days a week it's around £60-£70 average.

All food bills vary...and we would all like more in our pockets.

In real terms its not just about food bills its also other things that money buys, computers, mobile phones, a tv in the kids bedrooms, a packet of cigarettes (smokers only) and the car for the school run.

It is the tax payer who is going without to provide for these items.

About £80 ish...thats 2 adults,2 boys, 2 cats, and includes all toiletries ect and red wine.

i go the Grainger Market in Newcastle about once a month and buy most of our meat,we have a chest freezer.

Many people do not know how to cook, there were many great courses associated with sure start trying to do something about this...another victim of the cuts sadly.

My shopping 'food' bill time before last was £60 for the month, then through the week I buy milk maybe twice. In the evenings I live on coffee mostly but keep a box of cereal in case I get hungry

so, about £15 a week on average. I live on me own.

Averages around £40 a week for the 2 of us - includes toiletries and cat food for 2 cats (not the cheap stuff either!)

We buy veg from the market at half the price of the supermarket and visit 1/2/3 supermarkets to get the best deals. We cook everything from scratch and the weeks we only spend £30ish as we have plenty left over, we save this to go to the market and bulk buy meat.

I'm VERY surprised at the poster who said they can feed 8 for £50 a week!

Bring back cooking lessons.

Hand out cheap but tasty menus with the benefits.

Of course it could be she is too busy socialising, watching Jeremy Kyle or planing her next baby. Cynical I know but....

Ours is about £150-£200 a month on average, for four adults.... make that five, as our 17 yr old soon eats for two lol! Some months its more, but then it lasts longer, we usually fill the freezer and cupboards once every two months and that lasts us, then we buy fresh f/v, milk and bread in between. We both like to cook from scratch, and make a huge pot of curry, bolognese, sweet-n-sour or whatever and freeze portions of whats left.

i spend around £100 a week. no ready meals, very little in the way of processed stuff.....but nappies and soap powder and cleaning/tioletries cost me about £25....there is me and 4 kids......i like to think we eat good quality food....im sure i could do it cheaper, but for some things i wont go cheap on,,,fairy liquid, meat, soap powder tea bags and coffee......can be a bit of a label whore like that hahaa

but ready meals, where good in portion size and convieneance....are shite....cheaper to cook from scratch....bloody laziness....microwaves should be banned

noooooo! Microwaves are great for reheating up leftovers or batch cooked meals. Also good for jkt pots too - and then you can quickly crisp 'em up in the oven on high

leftovers? Whats that then? My kids are like piranahs.....nah i do have left overs but i buy the plastic tubs you get in the chippy and make a dinner up for my ex.....currently got 9 different meals for him to take home. HOW NICE AM I!?

I know i spend way too much on shopping but what can i say,probably spend around 100 and 140 ,i go everyday love fresh food and have to admit like the bubbles too so always pick up a bottle or two...im a label whore too but like the good things in life so why not,i earn my money so i spend it my way no one to answer to fridge and freezer is always full ,know i could cut my bill down but its a habit i guess,its killed me this week not been out to shopasnot being well so plenty to spend when i do.

Many people, including plenty of women, work bloody long hours....including extra hours at home most nights when you run your own business....not everyone has all day to themselves to prepare elaborate home cooked meals....so convenience, not laziness.

i live mainly alone ...spend about 20 quid a week,,,,and i eat very well ....and i love to cook so no ready meals here ,and i used to work full time with a family there was always a fresh cooked dinner on the table ....love my slow cooker pressure cooker and microwave .....
