See, the first one had Tom Cruise, it had val kilmer, it had Tom (I just cum in my knickers) skerrit, it had huge fucking loud aeroplanes that didn't help my already wet knickers from staring at Tom skerrit and it had cheese and 80's things.

Just about the most perfect package and NOW they've gone and done another one.

And I'm torn on whether I should move along and take a look or stay trapped in my 80's bubble with the first one.

Exactly! It's an absolute classic of a film with an incredible, memorable theme song. Just another film that doesn't NEED a sequel.

Cannot wait for this to hit screens. I don't care if people think it's tosh (you've decided that in the strength of a trailer, really?), or if they hate Tom Cruise.

I've decided I'm going to fuckin LOVE this movie, because I like fast planes, fast bikes, and Tom Cruise.

I can't decide.....

I really can't.

If I see it and it's bad I'm going to be soooo disappointed and if I don't see it and it's amazing I'm going to be devastated with myself.

I've not summed it up on the strength of a trailer, I'm just so much of a fan of the first one I just don't know if a sequel is necessary after 33 years.

I read that Cruise was keen to use as much real flying footage as possible. He got the flying bug and trained as a helicopter and fixed wing pilot, flying for real in some of his films, he's regarded as a pretty competent pilot..

If you look at the pics of Kelly McGillis recently - it looks like time hasn’t done her any favours!

For me one of the all time favourite movie moments is when she walks down the middle of the class with an amazing view of her seamed stockings. I fell in love with it in 1986.... and still love it now!

This is binary: it's either going to win or fail.

I hope it's the former,I really do,but I have worries because I've been let down a long way - a long,long way - by the eventual return to one of the greatest cinematic franchises of all time: Indiana Jones (several of you thought I was going to say Star Wars, admit it. Oh believe me,that's up there,but I think the new ones have been really pretty good films.).

"... Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is...well,to me,it does not exist as part of the canon.

I said,years ago,they needed to get on and make it; it needed to involve Atlantis because THAT would involve Nazis (easily his more natural enemy) since it was Hitler's early introduction to the Atlantean myths, particularly the notion that the fabricated 'Aryan' race,a subset of the Nordic peoples,could trace their 'ancestry' back to Aquaman's buddies,that formed a foundation of the Nazi's set of beliefs and self-justification. So much so that time and serious money was spent by the Nazis in search of the so-called Lost Continent.

But,instead,we got Shia la Douche, Russians and...oh,good crikey,what were they thinking?..freaking aliens.

And all the while there's still a really good story to be told about Mitchell-Hedges and HIS life.

The flight scenes will doubtless be awesome. I don't see how anyone could top Loggins' "Danger Zone" as a central theme song and I'd put money on it not being as hilariously homoerotic as the first one!

It's my favorite movie ever as someone else said. Young Tom cruise the older handsome Tom skerritt, goofy goose, fast planes and fast bikes what's not to love

It’s a win win for the studio sadly. Even if it’s crap, people will flock to see it. Personally from what I’ve seen it’s too much of a pastiche of the original already. A volley ball scene ? Really? Only thing that makes sense from what I’ve spied (geek alert) is that after the trauma of losing goose, he’s now flying single seaters ...although the f14 was replaced with the hornet anyway...think they’ve left this one too long. Remember the last Indiana Jones film?? ......

Apparently he is still a Captain ... but Iceman is also in it .... and is his boss - an Admiral!! ... interesting dynanic!

He was a lieutenant in Top Gun. A US Navy Captain is hardly a low rank, akin to an Army Colonel, and only one below Rear Admiral (no sniggering now).

When I was RN I expressed no interest in rank progression, only role progression and was met with the same derision.

Top gun wasn’t a flight school. It’s a course you can be sent in at any time, so that could very well work. 35 isn’t that old for a USN pilot ...

The trailer looks great which is rare for a cruise movie.

The first movie was awful when I saw it as a youngster and hardly his greatest movie in my own opinion so this sequel seems justified and hopefully better than the first.

His greatest movies in my opinion are a few good men and far & away. After that all his other movies are too focused on him.

Saying that...there is a natural successor (not sequel) to The Italian Job. Different story, but same calibre.

It's English, set in the 70s, has a black Mini outside a certain London Prison, involves an international gang. A famous posh actor as the head honcho, a brilliant sense of humour, that gettaway and a real feel good factor, that is sorely missing in the American hash up.

This little forgotten gem is called

"A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square"

It's worth hunting down.

Hence why they have you sit at a distance as once your out off the feild off pixel density anything from 1080p and up will look the same

To be honest you get better quality sitting watching it at home on a home tv screen as most people these days have a 4K tv

But granted the quality off the copy that’s out just now is not as good as the cinema but ones the quality there then would be better at home

I will injoy watching it at 4K upscaled to 8K very soon

If you're watching a 16:9 silent movie then I might agree with you.

But what about the different format (21:9 maybe?), the compression used, the colour bit rate (are all the components in your system rated for 4k @60 Hz at 4:4:4 bit depth?). Actual pixel density is only one part of the chain, and I'd argue 1080p 4:4:4 is going to be better than 4k 4:2:2 or 4:2:0.

As for 99% off it’s life it’s switch in game mode

But that one’s in a while when I switch it to full movie mode nothing comes even remotely close

I have done my compatriots with movies I have seen at the cinema and then watch them again on the tv

And the tv completely blows the cinema screen out the water

The one down side to it is it has ruined everything for me in terms off watching things

As once you lived with it for so long everything else just falls so short by a mile

It’s like own a Ferrari then down gradeing to a 1.1 eco boost Ford lol

Not a fan boy, was dragged along by the other half. So I can give you an honest review. 1st half was very slow and super cheesy, and I was rather disappointed. However 2nd half was a different movie. The action scenes were great and I really enjoyed it.

She didn't know it but our allocated seats were F15 for her and F14 for me. (Good call!) I clocked the Eagle and Tomcat references in a heartbeat.

Just got back from watching it.

And I loved the first one as a kid growing up and watched the original only the other night on sky.

When I watched it back I found it pretty cheesy but ok.

The modern top gun is actually great and I dare say it is almost better than the original. Great acting, great action a must watch. The only thing not quite on par, the originals soundtrack was damn well hard to beat and although there are a few of the original tunes in number two, it’s not quite the same.

If you love the original for what it is… an over cheesy, heavily American, high octane, homo-erotic blast with a killer nostalgic soundtrack… then you will love it. As a neutral, the plane sequences and general humour and sentiment are good too.

I haven’t seen it - not a top gun fan

I've never watched the first one. They arnt my kinda films. But I watched the 2nd with a few of my mates. And I felt thay it was quite slow and draggy. I also felt that it was abit predictable etc. How ever the ending scene in the jets was pretty good

I've done aerobatics on my first ever flight as a passenger, in a flying brick.

Doing an outside loop is amazing, scary and truly a bucket list item.

Was I sick? No. The withdrawal symptoms never were off.

Flying is a major addiction.

Over a year ago when I first (and only) commented on this thread. So finally got to see the film this afternoon.

Flight sequences brilliant, spectacular and well worth watching on the big screen.

Characters, ok even some quite emotional scenes thrown in for good measure. But mainly forgettable actors playing pilots.

Plot, without giving any spoilers, something happens and rather than go with a surprising ending, they did something predictable and far fetched in the end.

So for me half a decent film I’ll happily watch again on Sky Movies in 6 months time. But still think it’s not a patch on the original film.

The acting is crap and it's dripping with cheese and testosterone. I'm surprised they weren't grabbing eachother by the penis while chanting "USA USA".

Went to see it with a friend last night and yep, goose bumps (pardon the pun) from that first metallic bong/gong of the theme tune. Absolutely fantastic cinematography and props to the actors for the training that they all did to have real in cockpit filming.

Absolutely loved it, all of it, nostalgia overload

The Darkstar is totally fictional.

America doesn't have any F-14's, not even scrap ones. They destroyed them because they were worried parts would be stripped off and sold to Iran which is the only other country in the world that has them.

The 5th Gen SU-57 can do all the stuff you see in the film but there's currently only 3 operational and they're Russian.

Boring I know but I'm a nerd for this stuff.

There was lots of CGI, America has no F-14's and there's only 3 operational SU-57's which are Russian. That whole end fight is CGI.

Although Maverick made Ace in this movie, I couldn't help noticing that his 3 kills are denoted on his canopy by silhouettes that look like F18's, ie friendlies. Shouldn't they be F5's aka 'Mig 28' from the first movie?
