Not to highlight the poster above in particular, absolutely not - but their comments echo ones I still hear quite often do I thought I'd take the opportunity to offer some clarity. Here goes... Theory,in the scientific sense,does not mean the same as when the word is common in everyday speech, i.e. just an idea. If scientific laws tell us what happens,then scientific theories tell us how and why things happen. I'll borrow from someone here and use Ohm's Law as an example. It tells us that,in an electrical circuit,the amperage is equal to the voltage divided by the resistance. Good to know. But it doesn't tell you why. Electromagnetic Theory does, however. And it'll tell you why your microwave heats your food,why your lightbulb lights your room and why your Tesla car,er,tessles. A theory is composed of laws, testing, already-known facts and other evidences to give a working model of why something we see in nature does what it does. Particularly since the advent of research into DNA and the gene mapping, the'theory of evolution by means of non-random natural selection' is now one of the most tested,best evidenced and robust scientific theories out there. There is NO debate as to its 'factfulness' amongst those who actually know what they're talking about. I might draw a comparison here between it and humanly-triggered climate change. Like evolution,the sheer volume of data that supports it,and that this data comes from so many different sources,in so many different forms,yet all pointing the same way,means that to continue to deny the rightness of it is simply wrong-headed. It doesn't matter how much you want to believe something,if the data doesn't support it,it ain't right. As for monkeys,well...this IS something I'm surprised to still hear being trotted-out but hey,here's the deal: we are not monkeys. We are apes. Also,we are not descended from chimpanzees. We are close cousins of chimpanzees (which is why they're around at the same time we are!) meaning we share a recent common ancestor with the chimp'. (In evolutionary terms recent means,at current best estimate, between 5 and 7 million years ago. Thanks again,DNA research!). Finally,for anyone ever faced with the tired verbal jab "Oh yeh? Well evolution/climate change/vaccinations is just a theory,man..." remind the speaker that so is gravity (and THAT'S one we haven't even settled on yet since quantum theory came along and blew a big hole in things! But quantum theory DOES mean your mobile phone works...) but if they wish to have the courage of their convictions then they're welcome to step off the top of the nearest tall building to disprove it. "It can be visually demonstrated with a spoon under a tap. The curved side will be sucked into the water flow and the hollow side will be pushed away from it. A theory is the highest possible accolade given by scientists to an explanation of an aspect of the natural world. It is something which has been rigourously tested, produces repeatable results, can be used to predict outcomes, and has substantial evidence to back it up. It is the nearest a scientist will ever formally get to describing something as fact. It is but what causes it?"The air over the top of the wing is at a lower pressure than the air under the wing because it's moving faster. The difference in pressure pushes the wing up, creating lift. | |||
