I had a hybrid. It was OK, but boot space was limited because of the battery and, on hills, it severely dragged its arse.

I’ve been in a couple and they’re not all alike so it’s a bit like judging all petrol cars on just one example.

Some try to make it familiar, others like the Teslas and BMW i3 make it feel more futuristic.

There are some places around that specialise in electric cars rather than just one manufacturer so visit one and take a few on a test drive. An extended test drive or even renting one for a few days is handy too

Have a hybrid. It’s ok mileage wise for price of fuel tank it’s no better for me than any other car I’ve had but the savings on the road tax due to lower emissions

Yes - I have a Nissan Leaf - done about 23,000 miles in 2 1/2 yrs.

Mainly use it for commuting to work but it’s a great car ... Summer about 120 miles, winter about 80 miles on a full charge.

It has heated seats/steering wheel and can be pre warmed in a winters day so it’s warm and de-iced.

On motorway you need to keep at 60 mph if on a journey as you use battery too quickly but Motorway services takes 25 min to charge from 15 to 90%

I normally just charge at home overnight.

10,000 miles costs about £300 in electric, but you can get lower tariffs.

I do have another car for long journeys.

Am a proper petrol head - and enjoy driving it.

I had a bmw i3 last year.

Theyre great fantastic infact the power delvery is brilliant just needed something bigger for work so traded it in for a 2017 ford f150 v8 black edition, the mpg is a killer now.

Ill be having a electric pick up truck when theyre released.

I had a Mercedes hybrid as a company car, it was amazing. However i picked it to reduce my tax liability for company cars and never charged it once. No good for long journeys unless you are happy to fuel up more often.

We have a Mitsubishi Outlander. Had it for over three years & I absolutely love it. In summer we average around 110mpg, in winter somewhere between 95-100mpg.

We should have changed it in January but nothing comes close to it unfortunately. We were very tempted by the i3 but we need to tow occasionally, and it cant be fitted with a tow bar.

Electric are the way to go

Hybrids are good but your still burning fuel so why not go the full distance

As said above not all are the same and its all about what you need it to do

Don't worry about the range compared with petrol/diesel veru few fill the tank then drive till its empty

Full tank in mine £60 carge once then take a break around 200 miles and a charge while grabbing a coffee and a pee then set off again

Could be looking at around £10 in charge fees

And as of next year i think it comes in your company car tax or BIK (bonus in kind) will be zero on fully electric cars only not on hybrid

Don't listen to the bollocks about them not being any good do a bit of research yourself and then decide

And please don't be conned with the toyota bollocks

Theres no such thing as a self charging hybrid (it burns fuel)

Really??? Yes we do!! Some smart Alec will say different, but it’s true.. so if 50% of us were driving battery powered cars where is the additional power coming from ( nuclear energy is most likely source)

Legislation dictates that all new registered taxis must be hybrid right now. In 2025 they must all be fully electric. Electric generation will also change with Tesla leading the way.

There will be a massive jump to electric vehicles next year when all the major manufacturers catch up and release electric vehicles while phasing out petrol and diesel.

It’s going to happen and sooner then you think.

Does anyone remember the hysteria about petrol engines and the government persuading us to go diesel? Back then I had V8 petrol Range Rover. After much consideration I went diesel ie a Mercedes E class 320 cdi. Power and economy. And then diesel suddenly became the anti christ. So I bought a Mercedes C class 3.2 litre V6 petrol. So I've gone pretty much full circle and now I'm expected to drive a milk float? It's more fun to drive a petrol car so I'm sticking.

We're now getting more and more and more of our national energy generated from renewables. That will continue to increase. Lithium mining, I have no idea about.

But battery technology is improving constantly.

I have 40 solar panels on my property and have had them for over 4 years. They reduce the electricity consumption on my farm by 2/3. Meaning 2/3 of my electricity is produced from my own renewables. A lot of it is wasted, meaning I am not taking advantage of it and the surplus goes into the national grid to recharge somebody's electric car.

6 months ago I test drive a renault Zoe which is an ev. I loved it but unfortunately it's out of my price range at the moment. I could mostly charge it for free from my own solar panels.

What bothers me is how much of the price of petrol and diesel is tax, and where the loss of this government revenue is going to come from when mpre people stop buying petrol and diesel!!

And adding to your mining for battery powered cars the latest addition for homes is now power walls, which are battery banks for the home that store solar generated electric for use at night.

So think about everyone having battery powered cars and the miming consequences and double it for the homes that will very soon have power walls. Tessa being a market leader in those too.

Pretty much all of this battery technology is made in China.

Lithium is one of the most abundant things on the planet

Yes it can be hard to extract cleanly but i think your meaning cobalt really

And most companys are looking at alternatives to this

Though the phone in your hand also uses this

An electric car over its lifetime is much more environmental than an ICE car

The power grid is fine as it is

A new study published 2 days ago shows that the grid is fine and won't suddenly melt and plunge the country into darkness

Nobody but the ludites believe everyone will be plugging into the grid at the very same time???

Does everyone go to the petrol station at the same time now?? No!

If we all did the pumps would run dry but they don't because we fill up when we need it just like we charge when we need it

A charger fitted to your home runs 7kw

Your shower at home runs 10kw

God forbid we all take a shower at the same time by your thinking

After 2035 you wont be able to even buy a new diesel and petrol will follow shortly after if not at the same time

Hydrogen sounds good but the oil companys still call the shots and you will still be buying it at their pumps

Its ideal for the big stuff like trains or ships

Not for cars

Norway banned the stations it has for a few weeks after one of them exploded without warning

Does nobody remember the Hindenburg?? And as for batteries not lasting long

Most companys are garunteeing 100.000 miles or 8/10 years on them and theres is a taxi firm in cornwall using nissan leafs that are already nearing 200.000 miles on the clock and still have around 75% capacity
