It may well be just us, but does any other Couple object to being called "Guys"

For instance "is everything ok with your meal Guys ?"

We are not asking for Sir and Madam, but has good old Customer Service gone out of the window and standards have slipped ?.

This is usually, but not always from the Younger generation

I don't mind it. As long as they are cheery and do their job properly.

Couldn't give a flying fuck, the fact that they're checking on you means they are giving you customer service. Top notch restaurant with silver service then fair enough that's not what you'd expect, but for your average place I'd say that's perfectly acceptable.

Some waiting staff put their personality into their service (I'm one of those people unfortunately for the unsuspecting souls who get sat in my area) and I've been known to take it personally on the rare occasion people haven't liked my service, as to me they may as well say they don't like me as a person.

It's the sentiment that matters, I don't care what they call me (within reason!) as long as the service is good. I've been to ahorribly posh restaurant and received awful service while being called ma'am, words mean nowt if this sentiment behind it isn't genuine.

Exactly. I genuinely give a shit, I want people to leave smiling, I want people to think I've made their day brighter in some way because I care, because I'm interested and because I couldn't actually give 2 fucks how much they're spending, what matters to me is that they've had a good time whether it's been a relaxing one, one filled with laughter, whatever and knowing I've contributed to that is what keeps me going in a job that can be made very frustrating by people complaining about things that need not be complained about.

Example: customer complains that staff are stood around drinking.

Reality: stupidly hot day, very busy.

Staff member has glass of water by the printer.

Customer wants bill.

Staff member takes swig of water whilst bill is printing, taking up no time at all, in fact using that time very well to hydrate between running round like a loon not detracting from the customers.

Customer who is looking for any excuse to complain sees this as the perfect one.

Now we aren't allowed drinks unless we go out the back because someone complained.

Yep, and as this thread has proved you can't please everyone. Someone will always be disgruntled by how you refer to them and you're gonna get moaned about by someone. So for me, I'm me. I put my heart and soul into my job even though it bites me in the arse on a regular basis, because sometimes you get fucking lovely people in who see your value, your worth and the fact you care and they treat you as not just a person, but a friend or part of the family too.

I've been screamed at because of mechanical failures in a place I'd never been to over 100 miles away. Threatened seriously because of another store's (reasonable) policy. I really, really don't sweat much with customer service, and if I have to complain I do it super politely.

I don't want to be a customer they remember.

Even a "Hello" or "Hi" is everything ok ? is better than being called "Guys".

It does not detract from the actual Service given.

It was a General question about the usage of the Word " Guys" it would be pretty odd to say this to a single party anyway.

Others have said Terminology evolves and some say they don't mind. It was a General question, no more than that.

Personally we do mind.

For sure, people don't have a clue. I've had a knife to my throat, been crushed between a wall and door, chairs thrown at me, a baguette thrown at me, spat at numerous times, plates thrown at me, been told they know where I live and by the time I get home my house will by burned to the ground, I've even had people hanging around outside when I've finished work because I've not given in to their unreasonable demands.

I've also made some wonderful friends, been part of birthdays, funerals, invited to family get togethers even though I'm not family, I'm just the waitress from their favourite restaurant.

I was in a place this week where the staff had their water bottles all lined up on a table. I was very happy to see them drinking as it was a hot day. Less than 10 seconds to take a gulp.

99% of people probably wouldn't have an issue at all, but some people will always find something to moan about. Some stuff you can't change, but if there's something they can change to stop the same complaint happening again then they will.

There's a local Tesco Express near me with no customer service just an electronic self-service pay till.first time I went in someone was filling the shelf I asked him where the milk was.. he just pointed in the general direction, that's not customer service.

Well, we are both in Customer Service to a certain degree and Serve you all daily along with other people on the Front line in our Fields. Both wear uniform's and take a lot more Shite than some of you could possibly imagine. Knives, being spat at, called all sorts of names is routine.

It was a General question, nothing more than the Word Guys, but as usual some have blown it out of all context

If you don't agree then say you don't, but to bring all the other Crap into it doesn't make sense.

I work in a call centre and have on numerous occasions be given verbal abuse for calling someone sir/ma’am!

Nobody has jumped down your throat. You weren't just asking about the term "guys", re-read your OP, you asked if customer service and standards were slipping and it appeared as if you asking that question due to the terminology used, rather than the actual service.

Those that have spoken about their own observations and experiences have done just that, spoken of their own experiences.

I spoke of mine too, and did so in hopefully a bit of an eye opening way, so people realise that person who's serving them is a human too.

Was nothing to do with being holier than thou, and I apologise if you feel it was that way, again, goes to show one person will perceive something one way, and someone else will perceive the same thing totally differently.

I had the busiest shop in my town 15 yrs ago never once called anyone sir iv spent the years since then as a succesful salesman again without the need for sir or madam same on here with a fair degree of success

Soon everyone will need to live a monk like experience, as there will be someone taking offense or being bothered by anything anyone says.

Terms deemed to familiar or not friendly enough is a subjective.

If people wish to have only certain language used when being addressed, I would say they should carry a lanyard with them listing all the does and don't outside of standard social conventions.

They can then pop it on the table or give it to their server who can then adapt in full knowledge of what the customer wants
