What were you doing a year ago?

I had just been diagnosed with the big C so it was a life changing moment, things will never be the same as they once were, but I’m surviving cancer..

What were you doing a year ago, has anything changed your life since?

A year ago. My mum had moved into a care home and we were just selling her home to pay for her care.

What’s changed in that year is that my mum passed away a couple of months back. .

She was my best friend.

I started a new relationship and moved into a house after nearly two years homeless, living in my vehicle or on the beach, or in the woods.. I d had a major meltdown over child issues and this was my first time within four walls in some time.. Wasn t sure how to adapt back after so long in the wilderness.. Funny a year on from moving into the house i still have quirks from my homelessness that won t go away, ny gf accepts them and all is good.. A foot in the world of houses and bills, another in the freedom of the wild places

A year ago, I was told I had diabetes, so changed lifestyle. Started diet, started exercising, started meds, etc.

Now blood sugar is back to normal, I'm 20lb lighter (lost 4" around my waist) and I've got actual muscles - feeling much healthier.

This time last year I was having a breakdown. I didn't realise at the time, I mean I knew I wasn't right but just assumed it was a blip and I'd come out the other side. It was a few more weeks before I finally broke in quite spectacular fashion and realised how unwell I had become

Last July, dad was recovering from an op for bowel cancer but had a fall and banged his head - resulting in a chronic bilateral subdural haematoma.

They rushed him to Coventry for surgery and drilled 2 holes in his skull, to relieve the pressure.

A year ago, I was driving from Chelt to Cov hospital every day, for 11 days. (Didn't tell parents about the diabetes, until 6 months later)

I was exactly a month away from meeting the man who temporarily restored my faith in relationships and then went on to destroy it 10 months later. I feel I had a lucky escape.

However in that time my career has been very unsettled and I lost my mum in February. So in this last year a lot has changed.

To everyone going through things I wish you well and hope you continue to get stronger.

To anyone struggling remember the small steps take us to the bigger goals.

Nobody can prepare you, for just how crap it feels, in that first year after losing a spouse (and the second/third, tbh).

Anniversaries can be hard but things do get better eventually.

Hope time is kind to you.

Some awful stories in this thread, but also tales of fine human spirit and defeating the odds.

This time last year I was pretty ill, in the midst of depression, anxiety and generally feeling useless.

12 months on I've done a bit of traveling, lots of self-reflection, got myself better, motivated and am 7 weeks into a new challenge that has resulted in further employment on a short term contract.

I've also lost about a stone in weight and generally feel better, although not visiting here even half as regularly as I was.
