It's like Butlins on the water.

Over priced, poor quality, run down.

On the plus side the actual lakes and scenery are stunning.

Just not our bag at all though.

I love the Lakes.

Buttermere, Rydal Water, the fells..if you are staying in Bowness it is commercialised but there are some stunning places, Ullswater, Kirkstone pass..

It depends what you were looking for

We were there a few days before broadmasters last year, the weather was great! Long way to go for us but do it again

It’s Derwentwater! Get yourself through Keswick to Braithwaite, up around the Whinlatter Pass down to Buttermere then down through Borrowdale and Grange. Stunning scenery and a great drive.

The Lakes Distillery is nearby over by Bassenthwaite Lake and worth a visit.

The WHOLE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT is not for you? Sorry, what? It’s utterly unimportant to me but I just don’t get this statement at all. The area is vast, varied and beautiful. This would be like me hitting Rome and saying it’s not for me as my hotel happens to be near a McDonalds. Why bother tomorrow if it’s so awful? Mr.

Sounds like you are in Ambleside or Bowness which draw the biggest tourist groups. That isn’t the Lake District at all so much more to explore and do rather than stroll around these towns

All depends what you came here for though, not everyone can see or enjoy it’s natural beauty.

I would hazard a guess if in Bo'ness you're at the old England or between windermere and town at top end of windermere

I’m guessing you’re in the Bowness area, which is well known to be the most commercial/touristy part of the Lakes. A great pity you weren’t staying at the Samling, which would have given you a completely different view of the area, in more ways than the obvious.

The Lake District has many attractions, both natural and man-made, and is enjoyed by thousands of people, all year round, in all weather. Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy your visit

We were there a few days before broadmasters last year, the weather was great! Long way to go for us but do it again

Good you got the weather as it makes such a difference. There are only so many times you can visit the Eden Project when it rains

Certainly is a long drive up there as I lived near Market Harborough for many years and still visit regularly work wise. I'd say you get used to the drive but you never do.

24hrs in the lakes, and that's your judgement.

I spent the first 16yrs of my life living in Derbyshire, my summer holidays were spent there.

Since then I've visited often as I can, at least 20times.

Cycle touring, camping.

In 49yrs, I've not seen all of the area, I'm still finding new delights, hidden spots.

But yeah... 24hrs & you can declare an entire region awful.

Love the lakes and Cornwall but put off going by traffic and Parking ,find Wales Snowdonia and the Gower peninsula just as appealing but a little less busy.

I so agree op. I'm in the north west and prefer north Wales and peak district over the lakes. Scenery is nice but every town is either dead or full of tourist tat. But....Cornwall beats both

Let live in the lake District it has it's good points and it's bad points, we never go to the tourist destinations like Windermere,Bowness,Ambleside in the summer months, the best time is spring and autumn it's not busy and you get all the colours on the hills and woods ect ...

Having not been fully to the Lake District. Barrow in Furness actually nor have I been to Cornwall I feel I am adequately experienced to say I really do t know. But I would recommend saddleworth moor and Sheffield if I’m honest

For the amount of revenue that tourism must bring in to the region, its definetly not being re-invested to help promote its good points.

Must admit that it's been a long time since I've been but the Lake District had a faded Victorian feel and look about it, obviously not the gorgeous scenery.

Personally speaking Id move to Cornwall this minute but it is overpriced and there is quite a lot of rough areas away from the tourist traps.

Windermere isnt the Lakes anymore. Hasn't been for years. Its Blackpool by the water.

Drive away from where the people are, get out of the car walks the fells, buy a copy of Wainwright and go find the real tranquil empty spaces....that's what makes the lakes so special.

Alternatively; park up on the Glebe (free for 2 hours), pop in to the Tourist Information office and pick up a copy of the route to Brant Fell (individual sheet for 60p), then follow the directions through Bowness, and within 20 minutes you will be enjoying a 360 degree panorama, of just one of the many views Cornwall would struggle to compete with.

You can also buy scones with clotted cream and jam in the Lakes
