Furthering your education

I'm slowly sorting through everything I own in preparation to move and came across some books from my school days. I was always a big lover of English Literature and was a drama and theatre studies student and kept all the books and scripts I studied.

There are two that really stand out.

Frankenstien was a book that really captured my attention, I loved it. So much so, that I went and bought the author's biography and full works and educated myself further on the book, Mary Shelley, her fella Percy and attention their mates

Then there was Marat/Sade, a book (play) that intrigued me, we studied the script for our A levels but I, again was compelled to learn more and read up on both Jean Paul Marat and the Marquis de Sade.

I still have both books and all the additional books I bought because of them.

Did anything you covered at school inspire you to learn more about it or the things/people surrounding it? Have you furthered the education you started at school?

Ooooooh I was looking into college and uni courses just last night

I have my SVQ3 in social services (children and young people) so I could go and do my SVQ4/HND. Then I could hop into my third year at uni doing childhood practice. However, I don’t really know what I’d want to do with that...I could be a nursery/childcare manager, but I’m not sure I want that.

So looked into primary teaching, however I’d need a year of college first as my maths grade from school isn’t good enough. I like maths and can do it - it’s the actual exam that fucks me. And I’d be worried that the same would happen this time round.

So who knows

Absolutely, still read maths and physics books even though my profession doesn't require me to do so.

You'd have all the holidays off to be with your little one, would be perfect! Keep us all posted if/when you decide to do it!

.

Hmmm... yes. My first obsession with mythos. I'd spend hours happily poring over various texts and composing juvenile family trees. Particularly Greco/roman. But even the origins and ever evolving depictions of particular things. Like vampires and how they reflect the society at the time.

I fell in love with/became obsessed with Wilde, Thackeray, Bernard Shaw, Shelley, Byron, Shakespeare, Austen. My teacher was wonderful and would take us to the theatre and encourage us to read out so we got a real feel for it. But also read critical analysis so we rounded. Angela Carter? Fuck her stuff is brilliant. As is Atwood's. And that's what led me to doing a couple of degrees. And have an amazing ability to waffle.

Good for you! Well done. Have you thought about being an SVQ assessor?

I did that, but it wasn't for me tbh. I would like to go back and do a PGCE but teach adults not kids

North Bucks

Yeah my maths have never been hot so I forced myself to undertake a maths course which in turn got me my job today.

I also undertake the odd IT course in my own time to keep up to speed should I wish to head that way again.

I have a month to make up my mind whether I want to enrol at a business school post grad.

I found adult learning quite fun and very social.

Much the same as you OP, I did English lit and theatre studies where I fell in love with Emma and I've read it at least once a year since then, I did a lot of reading surrounding Jame Austin too.

Also as a result of a module in my degree regarding modern/postmodern script writing and theatrical technique I got sucked into reading everything that I could about postmodern theory and practise. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything, other than my own interest.

The way that I see it is that the education system is there to essentially teach a person to teach themselves and to drive their own education in later life.

Tea

Somewhere near here

I loved geography and maps at school, loved geography lessons. I went on to do geography A Level, a geography degree and trained as a geography teacher.

To out my appreciation of maps I have a world map tattooed on my wrist
