Dear old dad

He passed away 5 years ago aged 85.

A few years before that we both reminisced about proper pies. So he made some. One for me and one for himself. I worked for mine in his garden. All day I could smell the beef and mushroom cooking. Then the smell of pastry baking. He ate his early. I came in for mine early evening after a hard day's work. It smelt heavenly and I just had a few veg to cook to go with it and mash and gravy.

Mine was on the side in the kitchen. I looked, then looked again. In pastry letters was written on the crust 'Asshole'.

I looked to my old man, his eyes crying with stiffled laughter.

The old git. God bless him.

My father and grandfather thatched roofs, he was a really amazing guy. Always miss him, especially on the anniversary of his death, 63 is no age to die, yet here I am nearly 58,,

Yet one year ago I wasn’t sure I was going to make it here..

Life live and enjoy xxx

Hull

That generation of Dads were a breed apart.

My dad died 14 years ago at 78 yrs old. His words of wisdom still live on in the memories of my brother and I.

Like, when asked at my Mother's funeral in 1980, what had been the secret of their 30 yrs of marraige, he said (with a wry smile)...

"We'd a give and take relationship. She gave the orders; sometimes, I listened!"

Perfection!

Often he'd say nothing for ages then look up and come out with a very witty remark.

A lot of his humour was courtesy of working in Southampton docks and for British Rail .

H here,

I love this, my dad isn’t well, and this just made me smile as mine has a sense of obnoxious fun like this. Thanks for the smile

You are welcome and sorry to hear he isn't well. I can only say it's wonderful to hear back from people whose parents were fun too.

Often age is seen as a burden, but I've known a lot of old comedians. Some of the funniest people I ever met.
