Veganism

So I’ve just had a very unpleasant conversation with a guy I know who is vegan (not on or from

Fab). He basically was talking about how he’s loving this weather because he is hoping that the silage that the farmers are producing all fails. When I questioned him on this he said that these farmers deserved to fall on hard times and possibly go bankrupt (that is the short and pretty nice version of what he actually said). He grew up in a city, has no real idea about how farming works and has never seen the effects that a bad harvest/failed silage can have on farmers and their families.

I understand being passionate about animal welfare, and having compassion but what about compassion for your fellow man?

I respect anyone that chooses to follow a vegan lifestyle, but are these kind of attitudes towards farmers fair?

Oh and just to clarify I’m a country girl through and through and know exactly what some farms (especially the big industrial ones) do to their animals and it is awful, but I also know so many farmers who take incredibly good care of their animals and ensure their welfare.

I grew up on a farm and was a farmer myself for a few years, people outside of it have absolutely no idea! As you say most farmers take very good care of their animals, but there are bad farms and bad stockpeople too.

Not all but a lot vegans are band wagon riders that are single minded in their persuit to stop animal cruelty. They don't think of consequences or the effect that a sudden stop to livestock farming will cause.

There are a lot of level headed vegans that are logical in their views and the conflict it has with everything else.

It’s often the smaller, less profitable farms that take really good care of their animals, and it’s those farms that will fall on hard times if a season doesn’t go well. I just found his comments completely ignorant and misinformed and it’s riled me up.

Completely agree, I’ve met a lot of vegans who understand things aren’t going to change overnight and accept that, they just concentrate on the changes they can make for themselves and I think that’s the best that anyone can do, that’s what actually causes the ripple effect with these things.

No, terrorists are not normal. They may have been normal members of society once upon a time but now they have been brainwashed and are ideologically flawed. They have been radicalised and have lost all rights to be allowed to call themselves normal folk.

Vegans don't eat animals. Those who don't eat it because they think animals have a right not to be eaten won't care so much that their welfare is looked after before they are slaughtered because the end product is what they are against.

And yes some people are vindictive but if it helps them cope with a distressing reality that goes against what they believe then i don't blame them.

I've found that a lot of vegans are so, so they can one-up people. Their arguments are so easy to pick holes in. Yes, some industrialised farms and slaughterhouses mistreat animals, but that's always going to be a case, because human nature varies so much from person to person. Militant vegans take the worst cases and make it seem like they are the norm.

On top of that, they make claims about global warming. Yes, animal farming does contribute, but we need to tackle industrialization and vehicle emissions first.

Basically, they are all for stopping the meat trade to feed their egos, while up to two thousand animal species go extinct every year, due to climate change and deforestation

I don’t have any issues with their arguments for being vegan, a lot of the reasons are valid and I respect them for it. However, it was the attitude that farmers (and it was used in a very generalised term) deserve to lose their livelihoods and ‘live miserable existences’ (his exact words). I found this stance completely unacceptable.

Yes, and no. There are a small selection of animal rights activists that resort to terrorist-like activities. There was that case of where some activists freed three hundred mink from a fur farm, which then went on to decimate the surrounding wildlife

Going vegan kept me off some very powerful medications with terrible side effects! Through going vegan for health reasons I've become more aware of animals suffering and I really dislike the dairy and egg industry!

I however do not agree with what he said. As much as I want farmers to stop farming animals we still need food. I want them to stop farming animals which I often here they complain about costs and lack of profit and start farming vegetables instead!! They don't have to lose their business or livilhood just change with the times!

I'm not brainwashed. Not at all. I've done research, I've educated myself, I've looked at facts.

I wonder how many people here who sit and say vegans are brainwashed complain about plastic use and the damage to our oceans... The biggest way plastic use and damage to our oceans is caused... FISHING!! With plastic nets, seas being depleted to a rate they can't sustain natural regrowth.

But you sit there with your fish and chips moaning about plastic blaming the radical vegans by all means

Nothing will ever be 100% ethical but vegetable farms are more ethical. It's about doing as much as I can that's how I see it.

Plus the fact dairy puts me in bed in agony for two days now. So for me veganism is important. There's actual research from arthritis UK to suggest a plant based diet can really help some people with arthritis. It's helped me and if I'm doing my bit along the way great.

The huge difference between vegetarian and vegan diets is humans can live healthily and locally as a vegetarian but vegan diets require vit B12 fortified foods (or injections) and lots of their foods have to be imported thus less environmentally friendly.

I have no probs with either as was vegetarian for years and have at times in my life known more vegans than non-vegans!

We don't have the digestive system of a carnivore though... All carnivores digestive systems are short, allowing the meat to be processed quickly and expelled before the meat starts to rot inside the system. Humans have a very long digestive tract to absorb the nutrients of harder to digest food stuffs than meat... It's got nothing to do with a few teeth...

There are two species that go against this rule, one is humans the other is Panda bears, Pandas should eat meat and have a short intestinal tract, which means they have to spend a lot of time eating bamboo shoots to get the energy to survive... Human occupation of their native land has made this very difficult for them to do this in the wild hence why they are bordering on extinction.

The difference between vegans and non-vegans (I’ve found anyway)is that you will rarely get a non-vegan who tells a vegan what they should or shouldn’t do/eat. However, vegans will go above and beyond to tell the opposition why everything they do is wrong. So you can understand why there is a certain amount of hostility on both sides.

This thread hasn’t quite gone the way I thought it would, like I said. I was shocked by this persons attitude towards farmers, and how narrow minded his view was.

"Humans have canines to eat meat which only means humans are supposed to eat meat. Horses on the other hand have straight teeth that’s why they only eat grass. I believe humans should eat meat but also balance it out with other fruit and veg. I HATE VEGANS THERE ALL RETARDED!!

Good grief what a load of rubbish! Meat does not rot inside a digestive system. You should look at basic anatomy and physiology. "

We're actually omnivores and are designed to eat both!

Meat just takes longer to digest then vegetables with fruit being the quickest!

Unfortunately reading this post I can see why vegans can react the way they do!! Being referred to as idiots, terrorists, etc. Often the meat eaters are doing the attacking. Like the meat eater who went to a vegan festival and killed and ate a squirrel... Why?!

You should see some of the attacks I've seen from meat eaters then vegans retaliate and get the blame.

I have to say as a vegan I find a lot of vegans annoying and try to it vegan each other!! But equally meat eaters who attack me for no reason are annoying too!

I was shocked by this persons attitude towards farmers, and how narrow minded his view was."

I have to say I haven't had the same experience! I've had someone at work try to put animal gravy on my food, add cheese to food she knows I'm going to eat (like to a salad when there's none spare left for me to make more).

I've had people make some really stupid remarks!! My mum isn't vegan at all a few weeks back we had to go to the hospital last minute. We both came out starving. The nearest place was pizza hut. My mum was quite happy to share a vegan pizza with me. My dad however would've spent an hour shouting at me calling me fussy!!

Fruit is metabolised by the liver, most of it is turned into triglycerides, the stuff you don’t want.

Most of everything else we eat has a high percentage of ‘stuff’ that can’t be used so is turned into waste.

Animal protein is nearly all used and waste is little, hence not much produced as waste. The full spectrum of everything humans need to survive and thrive are found in animal proteins as long as it’s not confined to the consumption of lean muscle meat alone.

Vegans have to supplement with bio unavailable B12 in high doses.

Vegans choose their lifestyle right or wrong it’s up to them however when they start trying to force their decision onto others that’s always wrong.

They can be very smug and believe they are hero’s saving the planet grow up we have eaten meat since time began. You eat your lentils I will carry on enjoying my meat just leave me alone and I will leave you alone

The Vegan Icecream was a little iffy though.

Maybe it isn’t true for you, but I’ve never questioned anyone on why they follow a certain type of lifestyle, and if I have it’s been simply out of curiosity and I’m keen to understand their motives/beliefs. If you had read my previous posts I think you’ll find that most of what I’ve said has been very subjective and I haven’t generalised at all, it’s simply my experiences. Please don’t say something isn’t true or false, because this is all subjective.

Veganism was his reasoning behind this stance, and as I’ve said on many posts here, it was all about that. However, most people have ignored that and just given their opinion on vegans in general. Unfortunately threads can’t be controlled.

A terrorist is person/group who uses illegal violence to push a political point of view.

Radical vegans could qualify.

However terrorists can be defined differently at different times, depending on which countries support their view.

"So I’ve just had a very unpleasant conversation with a guy I know who is vegan (not on or from

"

Vegans are often very self righteous.

Why did the vegan cross the road?

So they could also tell everybody on that side of the road they are a vegan.

£50 says he’s got a leather couch, leather car seats, some nice leather shoes, belts.

Does he think about the damage to the environment and animals (that aren’t on farms) when his smart phone is made in many different countries around the world then shipped polluting the seas, the air etc etc.

Instead of being up their own arses maybe they should educate on how each person can make subtle changes making a big difference rather than ramming “you’re an animal murderer” down your throat

I was referring to those that irl instantly shun and give their own and, quite frankly - un-wanted opinion on dietary matters, as soon as the word vegan/vegetarian is mentioned.

It was of course, in reference to the majority of ignorant bile being spewed in response to your op though. (Not you personally) I understand and agree entirely with the point in which you made. There are extremists in all walks of life, we can just sigh and walk away.
