Simple things that seem small but build quickly.

Stop going to various well known coffee shop chains. Take your own coffee or water.

Switch to well known "budget" supermarkets, lots of the food is equivalent or even superior.

Walk more if you can instead of using car/bus.

Get your bank to do a health check on your account, should be free and you may find direct debits that you no longer need to be paying (insurance on appliances etc.)

Look at MSE's wallet workout - honestly really helpful.

Switch bank accounts and gas and electricity if possible, incentives are often given.

Withdraw X amount of money weekly to spend and spend only that.

Before you purchase any items check websites to see if cashback is available (Topcashback to name but one). If you enjoy eating out there's Tastecard and you can always check Vouchercodes for discounts.

It might be a good idea to siphon your salary in to separate accounts when it hits your bank - essentials, clothing, entertainment etc.

Posted on jacs thread so all those points - basically ditch all the nice to have and go basic but don't rule out the occasional luxury otherwise your life could become a drudge.

Hard if you have family to support but try and substute things that you pay for with cheaper alternatives; swop night's out with fiends for nights in with them and take turns to hoste. Picnics, walks and cycles instead of costly venues. Join a local free club maybe even vunteer for something. Make do and mend/up-cycle. Shower at work instead of at home (I joined the work fun which is substituted and had my one shows a day after training). Use less of your utilities (half a bowl of water for washing up, 5 min shower, turn heating down by 1 to 2 degrees in winter, by energy saving bulbs and switch off unnecessary lights. Change utility providers to get lower prices.

Highly recommend the Monzo online bank account to really get a grip on where your money goes each month and help identify where you can cut it down. It also offers the option to open savings pots within your account, so it stores the money away from your overall balance (though you can decide to pop it back into your main account at any time).

Not sure if this is relevant, but if you use Uber a lot, try downloading the Bolt and Kapten apps - a lot of drivers work for all three, but the teo new ones have a lot of discount codes for up to 50% off.

Set up something like a Monzo account, prepaid card, then use it as a monthly shopping card. See how much via online banking you paid out to supermarket or shops in the last month, when you have the figure, put that money less £10 and see if you can stay under your budget. I make it a game now, trying desperately to have money left over

Do a menu for the week and do a weekly shop for it at Aldi or Lidl we saved £250 a month by doing that (family of 5).

I've just swapped breakdown cover to my bank saving £20 a month off the AA's cover. I didn't know my bank done that.

If you have a credit card or loan try and pay more a month. Better still cut the cc up!

Saving money is hard but it can be done! Good luck

Get rid of sky if you have it. If you’re desperate to keep it ask to leave and they will offer a better deal.

Look at cheap mobile providers such as sky or Plusnet (better deals if you have other products with them). I pay £3 with sky for an unlimited minutes and texts contract. After I left sky tv the mobile side let me keep the deal rather than loose me. I pay Plusnet £6 for unlimited minutes and texts but get the deal as I have their broadband. Which is under £30 a month for high speed unlimited.

Car rescue look at that money site. I use their recommended budget one at about £40 for the year for uk cover.

Haggle insurance renewals. I tend to stay with my insurers because they will usually match the best like for like quotes.

I’m very experienced at being poor.

Plenty more as well, some of which people have already said.

Well worth checking what your local council offer. Here was able to join their electricity/gas cooperative scheme to bring bills down massively. Also loft insulation for only £99 to reduce heating bills.

Keep a record for a month (scary to do) but identify where your big outgoings are and then see what can be done on those, but never ignore the frequent little things.

A trick we were recently told (and it works!) is head to a well known meerkat site, buy a one day travel insurance policy (ours cost £1.01) and you will then be entitled to their deals on two for one cinema tickets & meals at loads of places.

Ok it's still going out so still spending money, but it it's a cheaper way to do it

The tip about withdrawing cash for the week really works. I think when you put it on a card you don’t see it as money, if that makes sense.

I also go through our accounts every week so I know where we are up to. I pay all bills by DD to spread cost and don’t get hit with huge fuel bills in winter.

If you’ve got a credit card with a balance on, see if cheaper transferring to a loan.

For non necessities, online shop, put in basket and leave for a day to see if you really do want it.

Don’t do without the odd treat though! X

Batch cook, each meal you make, make tons of it and freeze the rest in portions, after a week you will have weeks worth of meals that just need microwaving each night (or oven if you do something like lasagnes in silver takeaway trays) but it also saves you time, effort in the long run, money coz you bought the meat in bigger packs, and electric/gas coz you did the bulk of the cooking in one go!

Stretch your food out with value tin tomatoes/veg/water.

Buy frozen veg, you only use what you need rather than throwing half a tin of sweet corn away.

If you don't drive and rely on public transport, try Railcards which cover a lot of age or population type demographics. These give you 33% discount on train tickets and if you can book ahead, you get even better deals.

EG. I travel home to Hull from Warwick & back every 6-8 wks. Usual walk on fare can be as much as £90 return; I pay as little as £23 return. No hassles with traffic, parking etc. Some train companies throw in free or heavily discounted entrance to stately homes or tourist venues, cut price theatre and cinema tickets, even 2 for 1 deals in restaurants, bars and hotels.

There are unite a few ways to save, from using public transport and shopping in more budget supermarkets, to changing things at home so you’ve got cheaper overheads. I’ve had to do it myself so I know quite a bit about this, keeping costs down at first seems hard but it does work out quite well and you notice it quite quickly too. I buy all my georgeous sparkly dresses and shoes on ebay. I just got 5 pairs of different colour sparkly heels for a total of 36 quid. So sure its second hand ut if it means i get yummy heels or go without then im going secondhand!
