Between Scylla and Charybdis

I do like sauerkraut but fermented cabbage tends not to be the most, erm, social of foods

No I don’t but I love most of the German/Austrian food. The salads are always amazing.

It’s more an oil and vinegar type dressing. I’m half Austrian and the only potato salad I knew for years was with that dressing, not mayonnaise. Sounds awful but it’s lovely! I often do it for bbqs etc and everyone loves it!

My mate fermented his own a bit ago. I was a bit dubious about trying it but it was actually really nice.

Detest the stuff!

There'd a nice story about how to get people to eat it, though. When Captain Cook went on one of his voyages of discovery, he took barrels of sauerkraut to prevent scurvy. None of the crewmen would touch it though, so Cook had it served at each meal in the ship's officers wardroom, and told them to make appreciative noises and comments when eating it. Soon after the crew were asking for it, ate it with gusto and nobody got scurvy.
