The big D

So I gave up the smokes a wee while ago & it was alot easier than I thought, think it was because I was mentally ready. I did however replace my nicotine cravings with chocolate (no surprise as it’s in my name) & now Iv a tubby tummy that I’m not chuffed about. I’m watching what I eat now & walking but there’s just so much overwhelming do’s & donts out there but I’d like to hear from u’s, rather than google, what worked for u’s & how u’s got that flatter tummy again.

my own little sanctuary

Well I used to be a few waist sizes bigger and I got rid of mine by just doing sit-ups with a medicine ball. I’m far from having shredded abs or anything of the sort but I simply do a few sit-ups each day now just to keep it somewhat toned. It’s not all that intensive, initially it writes you off but it’s really quite an effective, non consuming way to tone up. And you don’t need a gym membership to do it. Best advice I’d say is to just find something that suits you and makes you feel good about doing it

over there by that tree

You could try planking - form is everything, so if you can only manage 5-10 seconds to begin with no biggie.

Try to build up duration over a few weeks, takes no time at all and can really improve core strength reduce that bump - reduce chocolate snacking or go higher quality with less sugar.

Unfortunately you can't target weight loss in a particular area.

The best thing I have found is cutting down on carbs (go for slow-release carbs and keep them earlier in your day) and cutting out refined sugar.

Build up muscle with weights because that increases your body's propensity to burn fat, including when you are not active.

Lose weight by changing what you eat, not by doing cardio because cardio burns muscle as well as fat so it's counterproductive.

Morning run and intermittent fast will fat burn. You gotta watch your cals. so you don't consume more than you need. Any deficit is good. Surplus? Your not burning enough. Go burn!

Theres no real answer to this....its a very individual question...too many things in to state...work life...home/family life...what you diet is like....what time u eat at...how much sleep you tend to get..when your awake and asleep...normal day to day life stuff thats individual to you..plus...what goal would you like to go for and set yourself....baby steps.

Id say...cut out as much sugar as you can....even switch to sucrose tabs for coffee say helps cut that down....low GI carb food is better for you as they wont spike your blood sugar levels and actually release slower into your body so helps stem hunger...increase protein intake and eat healthy fats is a great start....drink very little booze.lots of water to help rid your body of toxins and keep you hydrated..

Fitness ways...theres no magic formula...but i will say is this...find something you actually enjoy or feel the need to learnnew things, ppl say goto gym....yes i agree for doing weight training...its allabout correct form...so go light and work up...start on machines helps get you into it without worrying about free weights(barbell,dumbells)..but i would say use free weights alot more when you feel confident in doing so...even have some PT sessions just to get you in the right form so you wont get yourself injured by doing it badly and dangerously...cardio ways...integrate it into your regime...again find something you enjoy...me...i lije riding bikes....hitting the row machine doing circuits..

resistance cardio....kettlebells...hard to beat for a fast kick ass workout...so many circuits you can do with 1 or 2 kettlebells...they will build muscle as well as burn fat depending on what exercise and weight/rep range you do.tye main thing is...anything is better than nothing and dont put yourself down and enjoy your journey....

Ps..pinterest is a great place to lookat for any ideas

This year already I have lost 6kg, just by cutting out fizzy soft drinks (even the diet versions), cutting out certain foods I really loved and reducing portion sizes of meals.

Additionally, I got a mini-home gym style of equipment (lack of space disallows anything big).

It's been hard going but I have achieved more than when I was attending a gym.

DO do cardio if you want to lose weight. Exercise, move and get your heart rate up. Burn calories. It doesn't need to be excessive. Start by walking for 10 minutes twice a day and work up to a Zumba or spinning class or whatever you fancy doing.

Yes, change what you eat and drink. Yes, avoid refined sugar, avoid simple carbs, swap fizzy drinks for water and limit your alcohol intake.

The advice given that you should lose weight purely by changing what you eat to retain muscle mass whilst losing fat is a technique used by bodybuilders in competition prep, which will be completely unnecessary in your case. It's won't be counter productive. I'm sure you're not worried about retaining your 21" guns as you drop your body fat percentage. This is awful advice!

Apologies for the rant, it irks me when someone who doesn't train dishes out gym and diet advice.

I do agree in what you say in part, but it has to be realised that we are all different, and we all achieve different results via different means.

Last year, I was placed on a GP Referral to a local Gym. There, they attempted a suitable exercise regime, but wanted me to ignore medical limitations or defined No-No's from medical specialists.

I also attended a Hospital Physio course which included a 1-1 supervised Gym assessment. In 4 weeks they established the private Gym was doing me more harm than good and was creating potential serious injury. The Physio's also determined that most exercise for me was difficult as it's been found I have an issue keeping my balance. I can walk, that's about it.

As for gyms, I won't be going back.

I agree with you entirely in that we are all different.

A trainer advising you to ignore medical advice is ludicrous, especially when there is the potential for you to seriously injure yourself.

If it is doing more harm than good then the gym's definitely best avoided.

Eat just a little less, move just a little more.. if you have time, get to a gym, if you’re new to it, either do some classes or get a PT to begin you on the right path and do you don’t feel lost.. Cardio is generally best to burn fat but some weights is great to compliment it..

Amazingly, the Gym trainer, when I said why I was leaving mid-way through the referral, advised me, "You don't need to listen to Physio's; they're all pretend doctors and haven't a clue!"

This is the same bunch who thought I should do Aquarobics. My first session led to me being "persuaded" to edge back almost to the deep end, with water up to my shoulders, despite me being a non-swimmer and having no water wings etc to rely on.

I'd to be fished out by the Life Guard, twice!

cut out dairy it's quite easy because it's not really needed and exercise leg lifts, touch your toes just gentle at first, oh and no chocolate it's just a bar of sugar
