Am I the only one who gets irritated at the constant reference to 'getting the popcorn' whenever a contentious thread is posted?

The not-very-subtle message seems to be, 'Ummmm - you've said something controversial - just wait til the big guns get here and rip you to shreds!'

Irritates the f*** out of me - just saying ...

This has made me laugh as I have just made a comment on this very issue but truly had not spotted this thread beforehand.

It irritates me too. I think its rude to be honest. On the one hand it shows that people aren't daring enough to post their viewpoint and on the other, when others jump on the bandwagon, it signifies a put down, a lack of interest, a rebuff on an original post.

No matter whether you believe a thread to be uninteresting, everyone is entitled to post what they like within forum rules, and I believe posters should be allowed a response to their ideas, be that in agreement or disagreement.

Popcorn posters are like the kids in a playground forming a ring around two warring parties and shouting fight fight fight

I popcorn post ..... sometimes it's my way of injecting a little humour into a thread I see as getting a little too contentious, by trying to steer it away from comments I perceive as descending into personal insults.

I'm placing a bit of levity in the brevity if you like.

Well, if people post contentious threads and opening posts then they do so to get contentious replies.

Only one of which is the "popcorn" post.

Distastefulness comes in many flavours and disguises.

"

I enjoy watching and reading an evenly matched debate from varying views of a discussion without participating. "

Same here, I can see both sides, one trying to ease tensions and the other wanting a serious debate.

The popcorn/tea/making a buttie kind of thing doesnt bother me, but I find the whole private 'in joke' can make some people feel excluded and not want to participate.

It's just a phrase and it doesn't bother me personally.

Surely nobody takes the forums too seriously, it's only banter at the end of the day

"Am I the only one who gets irritated at the constant reference to 'getting the popcorn' whenever a contentious thread is posted?

The not-very-subtle message seems to be, 'Ummmm - you've said something controversial - just wait til the big guns get here and rip you to shreds!'

Irritates the f*** out of me - just saying ... "

You're not alone - I posted on another thread that I found it rather infantile, but I daresay for some it's just "having a laugh".

Sir??? I'll have you know I resemble that remark!

As for the midnight hour being the time for banter, I imagine you are only let out after dark!!

I feel the same when someone says they have just spat out their drink over their screen – has anyone really ever done that or do they just say it for effect?

"

Twice, had to replace a keyboard the first time, only had to mop the monitor the second time.

Also have, whilst reading the forums, in no particular order...

Choked on a chip,

snorted tommy sauce out of my nose,

inhaled white wine, and spent about 10 minutes coughing it back up,

laughed so hard I pulled a muscle in my ribs,

and had my neighbour come knocking at the door to ask me not to swear so loud, when I was having a rant at the screen!

As for the OP and the popcorn reference, of all the things said on here, thats the thing that bugs you?

Yep.

Everything else is personal opinion, evoking debate or indifference. The popcorn reference has childish, pack-mentality undertones and is tedious to the extreme. In my most humble opinion of course
