What’s everyone’s thoughts ?

Considering the character is “James Bond “ why would they get a woman to play it ? It was written as a man .

Is it just to pander to the multitude of genders and politically correct masses

I know the current 007 is a black woman, but she isn’t James Bond.

But no - Bond should be male

Bond retired.

His 007 title was up for grabs.

A black woman who works for MI6 and is an agent was given it.

She isn’t Bond.

I’m sure Bond will get his 007 title back

It's not a female James Bond, James Bond retires from being 007, they introduce a new 007, a black female. All good for now, I'll see how it pans out.

While I do prefer that they would try to create new characters instead of using the popularity of existing ones and changing what is the source material, it can be hard to do so. If they had created a new spy franchise people would be complaining about it just being a James Bond copy but as a woman.

Similar to Lara Croft being compared to Indiana Jones.

In this particular case they went the smart but also not fooling anyone route of not changing bond, but shifting the "brand" from James Bond to calling it "007" the code name changes hands and the torch can be passed on much easier to any race or gender. Without messing with Bond himself. They are also now in a better position to up the stakes and actually kill off the lead "007" since they just recruit a new agent. That does make for better story telling as the tension and stakes are much higher.

It's a hard cross to bear sometimes. Imagine being able to go to a meeting and being listened to without having to strap your boobs down, button up your jacket and wear a pair of glasses you don't even need? It's the white man's burden.

Also the thing with James Bond in particular, it has lost a lot of its credibility on this subject since the actor changes so much that part of the continuity is broken anyway. Each of the actors has made the character their own, but is breaks the immersion.

Unlike batman, spiderman etc they have never really done a full reboot of the franchise to justify the change of actor. So in the case of bond it is just a common part of the franchise.

Also, the change of a characters race/gender is the minor issue in itself, the important part is the writing and the actor for the role. Take Doctor awho for example, they change the gender of the doctor (they had with some tweaking the perfect story excuse to do so with regeneration) but the problem is the writring was bad and in all honesty they chose the wrong person for the role too. So not only were people already angry about the changing of a character for the sake of it, they were subject to 2 other poor choices in writing and actor.

It's your own fault for being near a woman in charge of a vehicle. What if she's got her period, she could only roller skate or zip wire then.

Another thing that makes a character change even more jarring thing is when they go full sex and race change in a single swoop.

It always feels more forced than it should.

And finally some characters should just not be changed at all because they just have a certain vibe to them. Regardless of inclusiveness and equality.

Shaft should never be anything but a wise talking, street smart, badass black man.

It would never work as a white man, or a black woman, or any other race and sex combo.

The problem I have with the 007 change is that it will ride the coat tails of James Bond instead of trying to be its own thing - not always a bad thing though.

It went wrong for Ghost busters reboot not because it was all female but it was suddenly all female and was completely the wrong tone and comedy style just riding on the back of ghost busters name and fame.

She can sit at mi6 offices on a computer.

When Fleming wrote the bond books it was a different era.... We've had 2 women prime ministers since so I don't see why there is a problem with a woman 007.. regardless of her colour...

Soooo according to some contributors a woman 007 is undesirable. On another thread teaching children that gender identity is not relevant to acceptance and inclusion is desirable.

2 different concepts though.

First of all they are doing the whole thing a disservice by having the "new" ride on the momentum of what is already established, instead of doing something we'll done and letting it shine on its own merit.

A male/female/trans/black/white/Asian spy does not bother a lot of people in the slightest. The issue comes when they ignore the source material and change for the sake of inclusion.

By all means make up a new character (like they have done in the case of 007) and as long as that character is well written and acted I'm all for it. Though again in the case of 007/bond I feel it has been done to again use the name as a tag instead of allowing a new character to shine on its own.

Just don't change the identity, appearance, and design of an already established character just to fit an agenda, regardless of the intentions of that agenda.

Nothing wrong with a women or trans 007 in my mind. However if it’s done along the same premise of the James Bond structure I can’t see it being a very good film and is probably a reason why this hasn’t been done before.

Of course if the premise is away from the standard James Bond type of of film it could be good

It's about getting bums on seats and making money.

Bond is a tired franchise. I love Daniel Craig but can't be arsed watching him do that strange pout thing through another Bond film.

I'd be curious to see a female and/or black Bond so yes it's a film I'd go see.

That would be awesome! But here’s a tip: On no account when you inevitably manage to capture Bond, should you gleefully and boastfully divulge unto him your ultimate cunning plan including exact times and exact locations for your final master stroke because the slippery bugger has a tendency to always escape and thus subsequently armed with the requisite details, will inevitably scupper your aims.....
