"It IS included in the bill in the UK. Always has been" Really? How come I never see any of it? How come on our menus it states that it ISN'T included in the bill and it let's customers know that if they do tip, it goes to their server? P

"I think it should be a choice and I nearly always tip (unless the service is bad) There were times back in the day when I survived off my tips because the wages weren't great. Fortunately that's no longer the case. Everyone should be paid a decent wage" This is like me now. My wages cover my rent/council tax/phone bill. I survive on tips. No tips, no food/electric/bus fare etc. Everything and I mean everything other than essential bills is paid for in any tips I make. Some weeks I can do ok and eat daily, others I can eat only what's gonna get thrown out at the end of the night at work. In the winter I regularly go without gas, you just get used to it being shit. "I dont tip. a) I can't really afford to. b) Why would I pay more than what's being asked of me? When I worked in restaurant industry for a bit.. The female waitresses would get tips all the time, usually from sleazy men trying to attract their attention. Us male waiters never got a thing, no matter how far we bent over backwards to please. When I worked in the kitchen, it was never shared out, despite being on a lower wage than most of the waiting staff (first job as a potwasher). The only time I've ever got a tip is when one of my employers, or I have had to do something extra and not quoted for, to please the customer. Occasionally then I may be chucked a fiver. Hardly a tip if I've had to do extra unquoted work though is it? I'm lucky if I'm offered a cold drink in the summer, only very rarely receive a nice email from a customer who is grateful for level of effort I put in. I get paid a wage though, I don't expect one, so unsure why others do. Waitresses arent the only people on low and minimum wages you know. I wasng allowed to take tips or gifts as a Care Assistant, they work far harder for their money and it's a job most turn their nose up at. Waitresses could be care assistants if they're that hard up that they rely on tips. End of the day.. Another shining example of capitalism failed. " From whatever angle you look at it shit wages equal hard times.

"I object to service charge being automatically added , so I’ll ask for it to be removed, then I’ll tip my server directly." I do this too, so that I know the staff will get their tips! This thread reminds me over 20 years or so ago when we went to our local Harvester. I paid by card and signed just for the meal - no tips. The service had been quite poor, so didn’t leave a tip. In those days before online banking, I would keep all my card receipts and match them up when my bank statement would come. When the statement did arrive, about £1.80 odd had been added to the bill. Effectively, round it up to £45. I went back to the restaurant (it was within walking distance to my home) and complained and was refunded the difference. I know £1.80 may sound petty to complained about, but how many people had they done this to, whom either forgotten how much they paid or couldn’t be bother making the trip back?

"I like to go to coffee shops and I always give tips as I like the service I get and I usually give 1 or 2 pounds, on my birthday we went to a restaurant and it was included in bill, it was 10%. I didnt mind paying that extra, should it be included in your bill automatically, whats your view, is it fair?" Depends on the type of establishment.....Costa NO!!!

"It IS included in the bill in the UK. Always has been" Sorry, in certain businesses in Hospitality, service charges are NOT included as standard. There are some companies or businesses that won't include it, leaving it up to the customers to decide. However, there are others who'll auto insert a Service Charge to every transaction. Invariable, it will be tagged as 'Discretionary" but unless you scrutinise your bill closely, you will miss it. Then there are the unscrupulous companies who NEVER split the service charges amongst the staff but pocket every penny. An ex-company I worked for even investigates if any personnel get cash in hand tips and insist staff hand it over or else! That money is never seen again!

If they go to the toilet, customers will complain that their server was nowhere to be found. If they have a drink customers complain that whilst they were waiting for something, anything, their server was "standing around drinking" even though that could have been the first liquid to pass that servers lips in 6 hours of running around. People will complain about anything and everything in the hope of getting something for free (not all of them, some are bloody wonderful and a real pleasure) but there are many in this culture of "if you complain you'll get it for free" that servers are at the scrutiny of every set of eyes in that building. So when your server does hit the mark, please think about the fact they're probably bursting for the loo but put you first, they probably really need a drink but put you first, they probably haven't eaten all day because they haven't had time but put you first, they've probably had someone complain about them even though they've done everything right just for a freebie, but they still put you first and greet you with a smile even though they're really quite upset on the inside. There's also a good chance that server hasn't seen their family for quite a while as by the time they get home their kids are in bed, that server probably needs to walk an hour home after being on their feet for hours at midnight as the buses are no longer running. Yes, it's their choice to be in that job, but many would love to move forward and get a job where they feel they're respected, not spoken to like something a customer has just trodden in, not because they've done anything wrong but because the customer is having a bad day and takes it out on the server. Some are simply stuck in a job that barely pays their bills, but are too afraid to leave because barely paying their bills is better than not being able to pay them at all and losing their homes. "I don't believe a tip should be included although I would always tip. Quite often if its on the bill I ask for it to be taken off then leave the cash as a tip soi know it goes to the staff not the house " A lot of places actually collect the cash tips from staff daily that get given them. Take out for any mistakes or people who have left without paying and then devide the remainder between all staff working that shift. Usually breakfast staff get nothing. This has happened in several places i have worked so its worth asking the waiting staff on the day what happens.

"It is also good to give little extra, cos the back staff wont have any chance to get any tips as they are busy behind the scenes. I heard that at the end of the day, the total tipping will be devided amongst all of them ![]() In our place the chefs are on a higher wage than the servers. We put in a pound out of any tips we are given into a pot for the kitchen staff on a day shift and £2 on an evening shift. Some days I make nothing in tips, other days I make enough to eat that day, get home without having to walk and put a few quid in my electric meter. The kitchen tips get divided between them twice a year. We don't get double pay on bank holidays, we don't get a xmas bonus or anything like that, the only day of the year we get double pay in xmas day itself. People say you don't tip the shopkeeper, many people do but they just don't realise it. That 3p change that you can't be arsed knocking around in your pocket so you tell him to keep the change, that's exactly the same thing. Or with a taxi driver, 10p change? "Keep the change mate" The tips I make are nowhere near the 10% levels people talk about. I'd say mine average 1% -3% I wholeheartedly agree tips should be optional, I don't agree at all with putting a service charge on the bill, but what gets my goat is people who don't have a clue what they're talking about making sweeping statements. Every business works differently and if someone wants to show their appreciation for the work another person has done, the effort and personality they've put into looking after them, it doesn't hurt to ask how the tip system works in their establishment. If they are happy with how it works then leave a tip if they want to, if not then don't. P
