Maybe it's an age thing, but I don't like to assume another's thoughts or intentions from a lack of a response.

Many/most messages go without reply, a lot without being read. Fair enough, to some extent.

But when an encouraging chat just goes quite for no apparent reason, that's just rude. Nobody, repeat NOBODY, is so very busy that they don't have time to positively terminate a conversation with a "thanks but no thanks" instead of just leaving it hanging.

Or am I just a whiny old git?

Well, I know I'm a whiny old git, but do you accept that I have a point?

Manchester (she/her)

I think online norms are different and it's best not to take it personally.

Fair comment.

I don't particularly take offence; I'm fairly thick-skinned. I just like communication generally to be clearer. Having to assume stuff isn't good.

Hillside desolate

As you said, there's no apparent reason, but the other party probably does have a reason.

Assume nothing and count on nothing unless you know otherwise.

Accepted. But wouldn't it just be basic politeness, not to mention potentially very useful to the other party to let them know where they fell short.

We only really learn from our mistakes and shortcomings. Feedback is always welcome.

No, because it'll teach bad people how to hide until it's too late, attract abuse, and who really wants to be told that?
