I think one objection is the cameras are picking out the wrong faces if you look similar to some criminal for example you'll be held and your day wasted/ruined because of the cameras

ASDA have had to concede they have in some stores green boxes to help cameras focus on faces..what's that if not facial recognition... a rose by any other name... Walmart who owns ASDA does not deny their use

It would not bother me if they were just scanning for known people with outstanding warrants ect.

But I do take exception to them scanning and keeping all scans as this would be miss-used.

Just like when they take dna from people to excuse them from a case, because we know they don’t throw anything away

If they are using facial recognition cameras they are supposed to have warning signs out

I wonder if anyone Lancashire has seen these signs warning that. an interesting point

If facial recognition technology gets it wrong in four out of five cases the chances of being wrongly identified as a criminal are quite high.

I'm tired of being told what I shouldn't eat, drink, do, think and now I'm tired of buying baked beans and having my face saved by Asda for 30 days in case I do something bad.

I think I'll just go and hand myself in

I went through the fast lane last week. The one where you scan your own shopping and then pay.

The woman said...... 'spot check' .. I said what ? She said spot check - it's telling me to spot check four items.. Before I knew it she picked up some of the stuff in my trolley and scanned it.....

Then she let me pay.

I had no idea what was going on .. BUT..... later that day I realised they must be checking for theft.... I was pretty annoyed and the next time im in there i'm going to ask about it and complain about it.

I should NOT be checked just cos I use a service THEY provide.

P.S. I'm probably prone to temptation like a most people but for a fucking avacado ...... gimme a break.

That's standard. They have different checks each day do tomorrow they might check one in five while today they check one in three. The amount of shoplifting via self scan is so great that it's worthwhile. Which begs the question why not just put this employee on a checkout and prevent insulting honest customers

Do you have more informato on about this? I know I could Google but I'm feeling lazy. I fail to see why Asda could possibly need to use facial recognition software. Is there a huge list of people banned from Asda contained on a stricky enforced global database?

I'm concerned about a supermarket storing my image for 30 days in case I do something wrong. I'm not a thief and I'm certainly not paranoid but having our details recorded in case we do bad stuff is so fraught with the possibility for misuse that it's frightening.

I struggle to see how this technology can possibly frighten innocent people that have nothing to hide?

What if this technology actually aided the police in solving a crime that affected you/your family?

What’s with the paranoid hysteria?

Asda have had facial recognition cameras for over 15 years...and cameras that can track individuals round the store....they also use software that detects behaviour patterns to spot thieves..

Do we really need face recognition/cctv? It only helps after a crime rather than prevent it. In some cases it simply films the crime but doesn't solve it. After being attacked or car stolen its hardly consolation to have someone say "the good news is we filmed all of it" but not have a clue who it is.

I'm looking at the bigger picture. If it's ok for Asda to do it (if it's actually happening) it's ok for all places where people congregate. Data breaches are common and the goal posts are being moved all the time. Extortion, scamming etc are just two possibilities I can think of

Yeah there's footage being aired daily on our local news of two guys breaking into a house armed with machetes. Of course their faces are covered and no arrests have been made.

I think the two questions everyone should ask themselves are 'Do you trust the government?' and ‘ Do you trust big corporations?'. If the answer is no to either or both, then you really should care about this sort of thing and resist it as much as you can.

Until the goal posts change. Many, many years ago many squaddies were just doing what they were told was right in Northern Ireland. Now old men are being pursued through the courts.

Think how easy the extermination of the Jews would of been if Hitler had all this technology. And before you cry Godwins Law, remember one of our two main parties is riddled with anti semitism. The other more than likely has a strong vein of Islamaphobia.....

The 30 days storing part is probably the length of time the system hard drive stores stuff for before it gets written over by new data. That's quite standard in CCTV systems and not that sinister really . Stored CCTV images are looked at when people go missing or when incidents occur.

I like the self service checkouts, I have only had my purchases looked at once in over a hundred self scans and I didn't mind because I had scanned all my goods xx
