Sorry for being a saddo

But so proud of my son! He has just completed university and got his results (yesterday! But were sent to him ages ago, he couldn't be arsed to look)

He got a 2:1 in Games Development and Mathematics from Abertay.

Yesterday he was offered a job interview at Rocket Boy Games as a programmer

Today he has landed an interview at Rockstar Games as a programmer!

Sat here in tears, missing him and just amazed at how far he has come. He failed his first year, suffered anxiety and lost 3 grandparents since being away! To say I am proud is an understatement!

Sorry, just wanted to share

That's brilliant news OP, so pleased for him. My daughter is going into her last year training to be a social worker and my son starts September to do quantum and astrophysics.

.

It's only right you should be proud IMHO, given how far he's came and the hurdles he's had to overcome to do it?

Plus he's looking very likely to get a good job that most boys would only dream of doing one day!

Thank you all so much for the kindness and kind words

I believe he has undiagnosed aspergers tbh, he displays the behaviours for sure.

His anxiety started when he moved into Halls, being so far from home did not help, neither did losing his Nan and Grandad six months apart.

He failed his first year exams after then had a breakdown at home. I took him to the Dr who was just amazing with him, first time I saw him cry in years.

The Dr spoke to the University who said they were unaware of his issues as he kept himself to himself.

I chatted to his tutor who outlined how they can support him, and support him they did.

Luke bravely went back on the promise he checked in with the Uni Dr and Student Services, I bravely let him go back (we live in the Midlands, uni is in Dundee)

Within 6 weeks the Uni rang me to say Luke was settled and acheiving again, was also told our Dr was in regular contact ensuring he was ok.

Back in track.

A year later packing his things to come home for the summer I found the Fluoxitine that had been prescribed, but unopened still in the white bag, I asked what he wanted to do with them, he replied "keep them, they remind me of how I don't ever want to feel like that again"

That's amazing! Especially with Rockstar games , that means he will get a chance to work on grand theft auto 6 and any other releases ... He's picked a bloody good company to work with... If it was EA shame on him any gamers will know what I mean haha.

Tbh he wants the job at Rocket Boy, apparently Rockstar are notorious for treating their staff like crap, and Rocket Boy was set up by ex Rockstar employees :D

But he is over the moon to be offered an interview because that in itself is a process of selection.

They have told him part one of two will consist of an aptitude test, 5 questions and a set time to prepare and answer. If he can pass that he gets to the 2nd stage.

Rocket Boy told him they were impressed with his online portfolio, and need to see whether he can back up the work with knowledge

He saw a job at Ubisoft, but didn't fancy Leamington Spa :D

Thank you.

He has asked the University if he can become a student mentor for mental health, he doesn't think there is enough peer support.

So to turn it around for others is just incredible of him.

Yet at home I just get the mucky pants and the cooking to do

Great that hes giving something back in terms of the mentoring.

Hope the interviews go well.

And well done mum. You've worked as hard as he has to help get him where he is today...and washed mucky pants too

Saddo? Good God no.

Proudo? Hell yes.

Sounds like he's had some tough challenges, met them, overcame them and achieved so much.

He's done that with the love and support of his mum.

Threads/stories like this bring a little tear to my eye.

What a cracking read to start the day.

More threads like this please people!!!!!

Thank you all.

He has another interview for a mobile phone games developer in Burmingham

I think he has his heart set on Rocket Boy games as he as heard of Rockstars bad rep when it comes to treatment of staff. That said I doubt he would turn them down if they offered a job before Rocket Boy, I think the Rockstar interview is after that one though

Thank you all!

Just had a call off him, was worried as he never calls!!

He starts work on the 2nd of September for Rocket Boy Games in Edinburgh as an associate game scriptor.

His boss is the guy responsible for Grand Theft Auto 3/4/5 and Red Dead Redemption.

Told him how impressed he was with his skills and mindset and needed him on board!

So happy I could cry! (I did) and he is coming home for a few weeks!!
