Why do some forumites...

...respond with PMs directly to us when what they write is perfectly appropriate for the forum.

I understand if they are saying something personal that they would not want to broadcast. I understand if they are responding to something we have written and they think we're a good match and want to start a conversation with us. But I just don't get perfectly ordinary, non-specific responses that would quite happily form part of the thread discussion.

Does anybody else get this sort of message and wonder about them?

The most recent one I had related to a thread talking about whether people like a particular activity. I said we wouldn't and the OP wrote to us personally and basically said "Well I like it". Why?

It doesn't annoy me. It just puzzles me.

Maybe they want to stay hidden but stay involved somehow... I've had it happen a few times and had some pretty nice conversations.

Because they want to start a private dialogue specifically with you maybe, either because they simply find you interesting or because they want it to lead to something more. But yes, I get that sometimes too.

Some times while it is appropriate for the discussion, they feel a pm is better to get the point across. It is more personal and less likely to be derailed from the point.

That is likely only a small percentage though. Most of the time I expect they want to get a convo going with you.

Agree with above, I'll also say some people don't want to admit to anything which may put them in a negative light with someone else.

Basically trying to keep everyone sweet so they have higher chances with people.

A bit like the smokers who say they're non smokers ... until they're meeting a smoker and they spark up their own ciggie.

It happens occasionally and it’s normally is having an expanded conversation on a set topic to start but could / can lead to other discussions, which I prefer rather than filling a thread with a personal conversation 1-2-1 that goes off topic

It happens a fair bit, sometimes it's nice to take the conversation away from the thread (often so as not to take it over). But when I'm getting messages asking if I wanna fuck some dude up the arse with my strap on because 6 weeks as go I mentioned I enjoy pegging my OH, it's a bit much.

Generally I don’t PM anyone after the forums normally reply+quote is sufficient however on a forum that started today and was then closed as it got too big I PM the person I was reply+quote with to make sure I didn’t overstepped the mark and we both agreed I didn’t and we both said how much we enjoyed the debate.I have in the recent past received PM for further information regarding the forum normally to do with Rios or OP4F

This tends to just happen to me of I say I like something sexual.

Sometimes months later, like they've searched for a specific topic and just pm'd everyone who had posted.

Can’t speak for anyone else that uses the forums but generally I only take to private message if there’s flirting or if the subject at hand is more of a question and intricate steps are required to resolve it. For example if someone were having some kind of mechanical issue which was the subject of their post if it needed a bit more than a ‘try switching it on and off again’ PM would suffice as a means to better keep track of the conversation but aside from that I have no idea. Best part about the forums is often the witty responses

it's an excuse to talk to you directly. It's not upsetting if you fancy them back. Should be flattering even if you don't. Provided they are respectful and civil.

Sometimes people just want to make friends with you because they see someone likeminded or different in a nice way.

I dont think any offence is intended.. usually.

I get this a lot and especially on the PM threads. It took me awhile to realise that the really rude questions weren’t coming from people actually in the thread.. Stalkers and opportunists, I reckon...

Yes, i get this a little. Often they just want someone to chat to so i don'tmind and can choose to ignore them if i want but when someone makes a toic about sexual fantasies i do avoid those mostly because the OP often messages to get sexual with me.
