Most people under 40 seem not to care. Text speak is seen as ok.

This is great though, as it helps me out the people I don't want to meet. If they can't string a sentence together, I'm not interested.

"How hard is it to use proper grammar?"

Dyslexia being front and foremost.

For some lack of education.

Never picking up a book since they left school.

For others laziness.

Live in a world of text speak these days. Also annoying autocorrect, just because it isn't in the phones dictionary doesn't mean it isn't a proper word. My biggest pet peeve the damned autocorrect

What was the last book you lovely fabbers read? I don't mean a porn mag

I have so many lying around some read some waiting to be re-read they were that good and some unread.

Not a fan of digital books got to enjoy paper at your finger tips.

It doesn't bother me particularly.

In the olden days if I met someone in a club or whatever, I didn't feel compelled to give them a spelling test or a written essay assignment before I decided whether to snog them, and it's the same on here.

Inability to spell or punctuate isn't a direct indicator of intelligence either.

Thing is, these days we see more of others' writing than ever before.

Think back to pre-social media and texting days - how often would you read another's words? Infrequently, I'd wager. Cards, the odd letter, maybe for work.

I am certain, and have researched this, that we have pretty much always been as clever or stupid as we always have.

I like language, grammar and a varied vocabulary but I can also see the blazingly obvious fact that language evolves over time and text has (sadly) delivered the next phase of that evolution.

At some point when the art thous and shalts we’re dying out I imagine that highly educated people quite probably asked “normal words of ye olde wherefore art thou?”

Even then the reply (in the right area of the country) was probably “ova ‘ere me old mucka, ‘as tha lost ‘em or summat!”

People who are not as well educated as others or have a disability in the area of writing, will not have the technical knowledge to write properly. And some people are naturally skilled in writing whereas others are not. I would never try to damage the confidence of someone who doesn't write well. I accept that bad spelling and/or text speak isn't always down to laziness.

That how I feel in my non native tongue, Jessica. Learning language improvements from native speakers is the best way, especially if you’ve already studied the grammar at school or uni.

I’m attracted to someone’s mind before anything else. I am drawn to someone’s charisma, then their mind. Intelligence can mean different things, but education can be easily differentiate from it. Once I’m intellectually stimulated, the rest (if there is any), is much fun to work out.

We judge people on language every day of our lives. In the face to face world it is how they speak, in the online world how they write. As a subconscious indicator of how similar a person is to yourself, it is more important to you than you think!

Who cares in all seriousness? People from all backgrounds are here, some like myself dyslexic... some that just plain & simply struggle with spelling.

If it bothers you that much maybe find another site.

Is it spelling or grammar that grinds your gears?

It annoys me when:

a. People critisise either.

b. Can't differentiate.

"How hard is it to use proper grammar?

Dyslexia being front and foremost.

For some lack of education.

Never picking up a book since they left school.

For others laziness.

Live in a world of text speak these days. Also annoying autocorrect, just because it isn't in the phones dictionary doesn't mean it isn't a proper word. My biggest pet peeve the damned autocorrect

What was the last book you lovely fabbers read? I don't mean a porn mag

I have so many lying around some read some waiting to be re-read they were that good and some unread.

Not a fan of digital books got to enjoy paper at your finger tips.

"

Problem for some people too, is they rely heavily on Spellchecker tools.

The issue there is 3fold. 1). Spell check tools are invariably biased towards English (USA).

2). They are usually 18-24 months behind reality.

3). These tools can't differentiate between words which sound the same but have different spelling structures and context within a sentence. EG., their, there, they're .

Text speak has become the norm, and is seen as acceptable.

OP. But look at it this way, when and if you meet someone who in print you failed to match with, vocabulary wise, but sounded ideal in a meet format, what difference does it make?

Funnily enough, I've just finished reading Mythos. I'd give it a go even if you're familiar with Homer or Hesiod, Fry does a cracking job of laying out some sort of timeline and gives the narrative a surprisingly accessible and timelessly contemporary feel where the classics can get bogged down in verbose rambling. Dynamic new life breathed into centuries old classics, it has the ability to make you fall in love with ancient , well trodden parable all over again.

Although I did read it on my kindle (GASP!) so you can probably disregard me as a literary debaser.

As for the topic at hand; who gives a toss how people type? I know some very fine people who don't know the difference between you're, your, or yore, and I know some utterly contemptible wankpuffins who type like they spend their afternoons frotting their self-righteous genitals against 19th century editions of the Oxford English Dictionary.

I can only speak for myself. It's a combination of a small screen, font size and typing quickly, without thoroughly checking. I am on often when I'm tired or my eyes are tired.

I hope that most of what I write is intelligible

The site has people of all writing and tech standards and people who are aggrieved could offer their time to help and support others and skip posts that they can't cope with.

The site, as it should be, is accessible to all, including people with disabilities

Shouldn't it be "How hard is it to be grammatically correct?"

In reality though ... seriously? People are just not educated to the same standards plus have you thought about dyslexics etc? If you can understand what has been written then no moaning is necessary if not, then just pass by without a thought!

My spelling and grammar are poor at times because I’m lazy and don’t check what I have typed. However, for those who have learning disabilities like dyslexia and those whose education didn’t fulfil their needs fully, such criticism is crass and far more off -putting for me than the spelling and grammar it criticises.

To be fair I've always found spelling hard. And auto text doesn't always help when your dyslexic. Sometimes it changes a word and because the word it changed to looks correct you assume the phone is right and your wrong, sometimes to comical effect. I don't really mind if some people are bothered by my spelling, it's never held me back on this site. People who are so narrow minded and judgemental to value spelling over the content of what I have to say are not the kind of people for me anyway.
