"So as I am approaching my 40s I thought it was time to get in better shape. I have just lost 10lbs (4.5kgs) and calc my BMI which is still in the upper part of “normal”. Does anyone else think BMI is a bit rubbish?" BMI makes no allowance for body composition... the old "If you can pinch, more than an inch" concept is probably more accurate. Cal

"I agree with loads of the above. BMI is a measure that simply should not be used. The healthiest people can have terrible BMIs. " And those, like my mother in law, with perfect bmi and super healthy lifestyle and diet can still be diagnosed with things such as high cholesterol.

"One thing people aren't getting is there is a huge difference between what a person thinks is obese and what is medically obese (just using the terminology here) ... all seem caught up with the BMI scale verses what is actually healthy " I think you might have missed the point of the thread. It was specifically related to the BMI scale, hence why that is what comments are about.

"I know the BMI scale doesn't fit me, but have had frustrating talks with my GP about my weight ![]() Same for me. I look at photos after I lost a lot of weight following the break up of my marriage in my 20s. I was under a size 10 and think I look skinny and unwell. BMI wise I was in the perfect range. BMI is a general indicator for the average person who wants to lose weight but that is about it.

"According to BMI I'm half a kilo from being overweight. I put it down to big boobs and and weight lifting. I could probably do with losing a few pounds but not the 9kg BMI says I do." BMI would have me losing up to 30kg ![]()

"Personally & professionally, I think it's bollocks! It's a height v weight scale. It doesn't take into account muscle mass, lifestyle, bone frame, and numerous other factors On a recent medical, I show as hitting the top line of dangerously obese. Right!?! I have no idea, why on this day and age, it's still deemed an acceptable method of measuring people " Totally agree! I mean, I'm very overweight atm buy as a size 12 and around 10 stone I was still morbidly obese according to that bollocks. Health, fitness and strength is always gonna be more important than weight. I don't think I know a single rugby players who isn't "obese" and those guys are fit as fuck! Load of bollocks.
