Was it really meant to be?

I met Kate on a blind date 31yrs ago. I very nearly didn't turn up because England were playing West Germany and all my mates were watching it at the local Labour Club.

She was late arriving too, and as it got closer to kick off time, I started to get itchy feet.

I waited, and she did turn up, but I often wonder if we'd have rearranged if I'd have fooked off, lol.

Kate says, probably not, because she don't give second chances.

Anyway they beat us 2-1

The concept of fate really interested me but Im not sure if i ever really believed in it. But if fate was real, could it affect our chances? Would it somehow twist our actions to do things diffrent .. so maybe best we dont know if real or not .

Fate kind of goes hand in hand with the butterfly effect - someone else action although not directly affecting you can affect your life - hence being in the wrong or right place at the wrong or right time - Fab is a good example of that you send someone a message and maybe 99 out of a hundred times they will ignore it but that one time could lead to a lasting friendship and no that doesnt mean you send someone a message 100 time

absolutely agree with this. people are not born lucky or unlucky... your fate is a function of how well (or badly) you brush off the setbacks in life and approach the opportunites that present themselves to you.

All anecdotal descriptions of fate are retrospective. When we know an outcome, it's simple enough to construct a flowchart that arrives at that outcome, no matter how complex the path may be.

Our humanity needs to attach meaning in order to deal with, events ,relationships. Believing in fate offers a contentment, a sort of passive control over the essentially bleak random nature of the Universe.

I don't believe in fate, or "what's meant to be". It's a comforting idea, but stuff just happens. If people hadn't happened to meet their partner, they would likely have met someone else they'd love just as much...

Maybe this lack of romance is why I'm single

I remember reading a story some way back when, apparently a real event.

A kid is on a bridge messing about dangling a damp string or wire over the bridge when it makes contact with overhead power cables for the train line. The electric shock blew him off the bridge and he fell 20 or 30 feet to the ground below. Having landed on the train lines he is then run over by a train.

So, electrocuted, fall from a high place and run over by a train... one can't help but think it was his day to die!

But its just an unfortunate sequence of events, just because it was a billions to one chance doesn't mean something cosmic and or spiritual forced it to happen.

Or is it actually possible that every single nanosecond of every persons life is pre-planned... if so by who or what?

Not sure about every second being predetermined by some higher power, however, I have experienced these so called coincidences, things working out in the end etc so many times that I have come to the conclusion that it is best to go with the flow and not to worry too much if I dont get what I think I want... usually it is for the better anyway...

So are you saying the sequence of events that led to you meeting Jay was preordained, that somewhere a power was at work beavering away making you forget your lighter, arranging for you and Jay to meet in that particular cinema on that particular night? And was this same power doing the deciding the fate simultaneously across the planet for all the millions of potential relationships or are you simply saying that by chance you were fortunate to have met Jay that night.

I don't believe our lives are mapped out long before we're born as that would imply some greater power at work and my logic tells me that that simply cannot be. The law of the universe is chaos and if you had fooked off Jack you'd have met someone else and then probably said something like, "if I hadn't fooked off I wouldn't have met xyz."

A serial of coincidences led me to meet him that day. No other way would i have met him. However, my bestfriend possibly met him about 25 years previously under completely different circumstances but we can not be 100% sure

Don't think there is a number big enough to calculate the odds of an event happening or not unless the answer is 1.

For it to be predetermined that Mary meets Bill at place X at time y etc. it would have had to be mapped out before time started given that, there wasn't a being/person in existence to plan it

Not precisely what your on about..but i'm inclined to think we make our own luck, good and bad..or rather i prefer it. Being in the hands of..what? Divine like forces? Nope, i don't like..i'd sooner take me chances with..well..random chance.

I think you make your own luck in life. ate or predestination is the same otherwise you are saying fate has destined people are due to have horrible lives in some cases and that is too harsh to contemplate.

I'm a bit of a believer in fate which is why when I book my holidays to Egypt and my mam panics about the Arab Spring stuff I tell her that a) I'm nowhere near Cairo and b) If it was my day to die, it'd happen in Arse End of Universe anyway.....Not gonna test the theory by booking a fortnight's All Inclusive in Helmand Province though.....mind you...lots and lots of squaddies ***googles extreme tourism***

1989 in Oz I ran my car into a house fence d*unk on a fri night before the ski season started the next day.I know if I didn't hit that fence i would have had a head on and killed someone driving out on the country road to the farm i lived on in the following months.I lost my license and couldn't work so jumped on a plane to london then worked in Europe and now living in Scotland married with a great son, oh but now a crap marriage lol

Well the way i was drinking and driving and there was no traffic on that road until the next day then for the next 3 months loads of cars with families using it I feel someone was looking over me and decided to give me a break and kick me up the arse big time to teach me a lesson which it certainly did and changed my life forever.

I can't decide

Some people do seem to 'attract' horribly bad 'luck' in their lives and never seem to get a break.. surely if everything was planned nobody would be a big enough bastard to plan such shitty lives for these people.

I did used to believe in lots of things being planned out, but when I was younger I joined the spiritual church, I found that I got to a point where I was unable to make a decision without seeking some 'message' on things... it was disruptive in the end and sometimes I tried so hard to 'make it true' that I was completely blind to other opportunities - all my fault of course.

I try my best now to be in control of my own life... obviously we can't be in control of verything but I don't think there is some 'author'.

Lots of people think if there is no grand design, what's the point of it all? I tend now to think the opposite.

i think the very idea that fate and non-fate cant exist together is the perceived problem.the universe is pretty much relative to its inhabitants...some people are destined some are not.. its just a chaotic balance that appears to work on almost all scales. energy,thought,matter all attract and repel in both an infinite and finite way
