I found my self a pie and mash shop Romford way. Always wanted to try one. It was quite and eye opener. The menu was simple, you have the choice of pie (not a selection of pies, just pie). So naturally I had the pie. Pie turned out to be mince beef and onion (I think). It was all very reasonably priced and the place was popular. But to be honest I found the pie to be very mediocre, the mash was fine and that liquor stuff is just very bland and unremarkable. Overall a bit of an anti-climax, not worth the hype that comes from that part of the world.

Give me proper rich gravy any day.

from Home Counties to Middle Earth

Love a good pie, though usually I make my own - steak and ale, or chicken and tarragon in a white wine sauce. Nice creamy mash (or boiled) and a side of al dente veg.

The liquor is a thin parsley sauce. It should be made from water used to cook eels, but tends not to be these days.

It’s an ok meal. A bit fetishised by those who like to think themselves 'proper' Londoners.

I like the combination of mash with pie or sausages but what's all this about adding liquor?? Is it a specific liquor you speak of? Because I want to try this delicacy out.

That's the place I had pie n mash, Dagenham. It was a place near the Morrison's store. Had fixed wooden furniture to small for anyone of big build to squeeze into. The liquor was really unimpressive. Don't know why you'd replace gravy for it?
