zoo

another thread got me thinking

i do not think zoos are a good idea

i get they do a lot of good for conservation but i hate seeing animals caged to my mind they should be free in their natural enviroment

am i just being ignorant of their worth or do you agree with me?

Sadly, for many species, their natural environment no longer exists, or would be able to sustain them. I would agree with you on some of the smaller zoos, but the bigger parks can be valuable in helping to keep the species in existence.

This. Also, some animals are fine in restricted areas. Fuengirola Zoo in Spain is amazing, with several areas open for the animals. I must admit I am not sure about bigger animals, such as big cats and great apes, being restricted, but soon zoos might be the only place we'll see them.

Why don't they just turn Rutland into a big open plan zoo? Plenty of space and water, fairly central.

I've heard there's already some wild life there.

I love my local Paignton Zoo and it makes learning all about animals so much more interesting when i was a lot younger

I think regulations must be so strict on these places they staff wouldn't dare abuse or neglect an animal. Im all for them

It already is a flaming so have you seen some of the apes that live here.

same with dolphin parks most are rescued rather than caught for shows

see i do get the conservation aspect of it honest i do but i'm really conflicted by the caging of such beautiful animals

ok my last visit to a zoo has tainted my view i'm sure, it was when our kids were little and we took them to London zoo and seeing them all caged is such small areas really broke my heart, we did a few years later take the kids to monkey world and i thought that was fantastic, they are all rescued monkeys and the enclosures are massive and if they hadn't been recued and housed there they would most likely not of had a very long and most definately not as good a life as they are having there so that is how i justify it to myself but zoos for me are another matter i just can't justify it to myself

Remember taking our kids to London Zoo years ago and seeing a polar bear that was quite insane ,caused by his surroundings. None of us have been to a zoo since on the basis that if we want to see a giraffe we'll go to Africa.

They would never go to the circus either but i think animals have been banned from them now

I had been to Twycross Zoo many times as a child, but as an adult I went to London Zoo. Reptiles, snakes, birds, the smaller apes…. yep all OK… then the big cats… I could have cried. Such beautiful animals, designed to roam and run and hunt, pacing endlessly up and down along 10 meters of wire fence.

I walked out.

see thats how it got me it really broke my heart and the elephant enclosure too that was so small for such a magnificent animal

i get they are short on space but why should the animals suffer because of it
