Missing snake

I know from pet threads on here that there are quite a few people who own snakes, have any of you had one escape?

We found out this morning that our 1 year old Russian ratsnake has escaped from his viv, found the door open by about 1 cm this morning. We’ve looked all over the ground floor of our house, popped a mouse in his viv hoping that the scent will entice him (he should be hungry as he’s due a feed on Wednesday) and also put loads of makeshift hides around the room in the hope that he decides one of them is a good place to hang out.

Any other tips for us to try and capture him?

I suspect he was behind the sofa this morning as the cat was fixated on something and jumped a mile when I touched her. Didn’t think anything of it until I check on him a little later and found the door open. I’ll put some flour down before bed tonight and lock the cats out the room, hopefully it will help

Can you call a snake expert in? Like a Poirot for pets? Little wriggler could get anywhere....they may know where it would hide?

Why not try smearing some Novichock around the place? You should find him the same evening looking lifeless on a bench outside the nearest pizzeria

Wait till night time. lay noisy tic bags all over the floor downstairs and sit quietly and listen for the rustling. Then stick the lights on and grab him.

Check in warm places (behind radiators, airing cupboard) dark places line under the sink.

I've lost many snakes and they're the usual places I find them

Most probably actually in the base of the sofa. My friends snake seems to impossibly squeeze into anywhere. It will come out when it’s hungry unless it can leave the house. My friends a plane geek so it often sneaks into whatever part he has on display in his house.

My friend microwaves a mouse so it’s nice and hot and it will lock onto the heat and smell.

Try make everywhere as cool as possible and put the heating in the viv on high he will want to go where the heat is, usually find tv/fridge etc is where they hide if the heating is off

Our sofa is a vintage crescent shaped chesterfield style, has a couple of holes underneath where it has been opened up to separate the 2 halves and then to put them back together again. I said to hubby I’d bet he’s hiding in there

Thankfully none of mine have got out. Put talc or flour down ,check shoes etc thankfully its warm weather so should be ok for a while. Hope he comes back soon

Our old 7ft bull snake once escaped and ended up inside the back of the fridge. It climbed up where the wire frame stuff is that protects the fridge from being against the wall and was a nightmare to get back out. Unfortunately it got ibd and we had to get it put to sleep. Hope u get it sorted tho x

Um, that wire frame you mention - isn't there to protect the fridge from the wall - it's the apparatus that removes heat from the refrigerant that is pumped around your appliance to keep your food chilled. It's supposed to be no closer than a specified (in your appliance manual) distance from the wall.
