Company: We'd like to promote mental health in the workplace

Employees: Great. How about employing more people so we feel less pressured? How about giving us regular pay raises so that we don't need to worry about the spiralling cost of living?

Work: No, not like that. Try yoga

Too many ambitions, too few resources and unwillingness to prioritise. It’s fucking insanity. Burnt out, stressed and demotivated employees are so productive At least they can do the downward dog while the organisation shouts bend over here it comes again.

My previous employer was very good at ticking boxes where mental health care was concerned while running a six monthly policy of redundancies or requiring people to reapply for their job.

It's shite like this that gets my goat ...

"In the true spirit of boosting morale in the office, next Friday will be our Funky Friday with Foods from Around the World.

Each team have picked a country and each team member will be required to bring something to eat from that specific country.

Please discuss this with your Team Leader to decide what it is you would like to bring.

Also, if everyone could wear something either Funky (80’s) or Floral just to make it a bit fun"

Fuck.Off.

Morale is low because people are struggling with the amount of work they are faced with and seeing their colleagues leave at an alarming rate

Morale is low because targets have set too high and are unachievable

Morale is low because no one has had a bonus in 18 months because of the unachievable targets

Morale is low because people are being disciplined for coming in 2 minutes late

Morale is low because new contracts have been issued banning additional payments for overtime and trying to sneak Saturday working in under the radar

Morale is low because rather than deal with over riding corporate issues, you push, push, push for the changes to come from the lowest paid

Getting to sample Freda's enchilladas or Neil turning up in a 'wacky outfit' will solve fuck all

This sounds so much like where I work. We even have mental health ambassadors now who have been to a couple of meetings and now wear a green lanyard. You can go to them at any time to discuss your issues. They are not qualified in the slightest so could be saying anything to people genuinely struggling which, to me, sounds like it could do more damage if they aren’t careful. The one from my team is has loads of issues himself and is in therapy. He is one of those people who shows no interest in others and turns every conversation back to himself and his problems and is one of the laziest people I’ve ever worked with. Someone else from my team keeps disappearing off with him for over an hour each time, always mid afternoon when the part timers have gone home so there’s hardly anyone left to man the phones and we can’t get have a break because you can’t leave just one person in their own.

But hey make sure your area is decorated in the style of your nominated country or film title and don’t forget bingo at 3 and you must put a team member forward for pin the tail on the donkey so you can win your points

To be fair my company is good at this, we have a wellbeing pack, which is a bit naff but we also have a helpline where you can talk about anything, if needed they will arrange and pay for counselling, or help with debt, housing, domestic abuse, anything you need.

I've not used it but have the details, colleagues who have used it rate it highly.

I work for a large organisation who are very good around MH support. It’s great to know if there was ever a problem they’d be there to help it.

Some of the support others have received has been phenomenal.

I suppose it’s one benefit of working in education.

Half of this is down to the HSE driving a campaign on health in the work place..they have pushed safety a long way but now the NHS and local authorities complain about the costs from mental health, so the emphasis has moved from the professionals paid by the government at various levels to try and address at what is often the source of mental health the workplace. Whilst this has many merits it's also putting poorly or untrained people in the firing line to try and assist people suffering from mental health issues. Hopefully it will result in many work places improving but when money is the driver behind business the wellbeing of its workforce is often seen as secondary.

So when you're burnt out, broken bodied and needing different hours you'll tell your employers to pay you the same or to get fucked and as you'll re-train when ill.

It doesn't work like that. People that are fit swing the lead and get away with it as they can catch up. People who need help get very little support as they are above the parapet. If help is given, others want it - when others want it and don't get, you get attitudes like yours.

To clear this up as Written word has obviously come across quite harshly (not my intention)

Why moan about your job but not do anything about it? If you feel someone is taking the piss stand up for yourself? Only you can change your life direction.

If anyone thinks that’s harsh then that’s you’re opinion.

I have had only two employed jobs, one was great but work dried up as an apprentice and the second one I stayed in for 11 years eventually having a breakdown and being signed off with depression and anxiety.

I know first hand the powerful affect of mh and the debilitating effects on the body to even do simple daily tasks that end up taking 10 times as long or 10 times as hard as they should be.

I now work for myself and strive to learn something new every week and I have zero tolerance to people or company’s who think they can take the piss. I will graft hard for a good days pay but I’ll walk away if you think your going to take the piss.

I do have empathy and compassion for people’s situations as I’ve been at the bottom sleeping in my van so I know what it’s like. I will always go the extra mile to pay better and look after subcontractors but people have to also help themselves.

If people are on here saying they got shit employers that are abusive/piss takers, why are they spending their time here looking for a shag and not learning a new skill to get themselves in better employment or even self employed and be their own boss!?

Perfect description of the environment in the last organisation I worked for. Compulsory ‘fun’ and compelling teams to compete with each other to maximise charidee contributions, whilst wildly increasing workloads and reaponsibilities and making hasty, I’ll-informed decisions because no one had the time to properly consider them. Put me off working for a large corporation for life.
