First 'lads' (or girly) holiday.

Northampton Somewhere

My 17 year old son is going on his first lads holiday in a couple of weeks. There are 13 of them, only him and one other are under 18. They're going to Gran Canaria on an all inclusive. I'm hoping the 2 17 year olds won't be given a different colour wrist band (bit embarrassing for them)....

Anyway....

I need to have a safety talk with him before he goes. You know ~ don't go swimming if you've been drinking, no balcony hopping that sort of thing.

What else should I mention?

Hes very sensible but i cant help feeling a little tetchy about it. I think hearing some of your experiences might help in a funny kind of way.

Please

I've never been on one but would suggest not doing anything really tacky is a good starting point.

Sun tan lotion!

There's nothing worse than getting so badly burnt on the first day you can't go back out the rest of the week.

I took 30 kilos of luggage away with me my first lads holiday.

By about the 5th I had it down to about 10.

(Plus stash some condoms in his luggage when he’s not looking)

Personal safety, condoms and consent!

He's bound to do daft things, that's what happens on holidays but make sure they're looking out for one another.

Not much more you can say, lads are lads and will do stuff they arnt supposed to. That’s not saying he will go and cause trouble or anything like that but we all do silly things.

He will hate the pep talk but will appreciate it secretly knowing you are looking out for him.

Just don’t ask to see his camera roll on his phone when he comes home,

Hope he has a brilliant time.

My biggest piece of advice would be tell him to get a safe in his room and put his money and passport in there. Nothing more aggro that someone stealing it from his room. Especially on lads holidays.

Hes very sensible but i cant help feeling a little tetchy about it. I think hearing some of your experiences might help in a funny kind of way.

The importance of knowing where his passport and tickets are at all times.

Never carry any bags for anybody else or let anybody get access to his luggage.

And If he’s going to Playa Ingles

Tell him to avoid the Dunes at Maspalomas on his own.

* I'll tell to put it in the safe in the room, hadn't thought of that!

A lad has just gone missing in Tenerife

Went out jet-skying with his mates, got off to do some snorkling and never came back. As far as I know, he was never found.

Apparently, he took his life jacket off. Make sure he knows better

Sensible suggestions...

Hot water and some time and you can stretch the AI wristbands to get them off.

Anyone leaving the hotel, he could swap bands if he's given a u18 one.

Other than that, I cant really suggest anything that isn't going to be forgotten when they're all d*unk.

I'd say to just be careful and to consider how anything bad happening would hurt you.

When I used to go away, I didn't care what happened to me, but I'd hate my stupidity to impact on my mam.

There and to the left a bit

Think most have been mentioned but one that I confess to being guilty of in the past, and that is often forgotten - the importance of making sure he gets some food inside him especially before going out drinking - it helps soak up the alcohol

Get a business card from the hotel before you go out on the first night. So when you get lost you can at least get directions back.

This.

Plus. There's enough of them to watch each other's back. Don't end up on your own. Try not to drink too much alcohol during the day (if they're awake during the day that is). Drink water in between pints. Don't jump off balconies no matter how many double dogs are in the dare. Don't get into arguments with doormen and coppers. They have a much lower tolerance threshold than ours and the don't do 'bants'. Oh....and enjoy yourself!!!

He'll probably have to cancel because his eyes will have rolled so much he'll have to go to A&E

Is he straight, bi or gay?

Maspolomas beach has a great gay section and another nudist section if straight.

Lots of gay bars and clubs in Playa Del Ingles Yumbo Centre, can recommend The Bunker for late night fun! Dark room is good, its a safe place but can be hardcore at times!

Make sure he takes lots of condoms, and that they are the correct size! Can buy My Size condoms in sex shop in Yumbo if necessary, although maybe cheaper online before he goes! Range from small to XXL sizes.

Watch out for young girls in sexy bikinis on beach normally locals who chat to you and say go for a swim with them and then their mates steal your bag!

Make sure travel insurance covers all activities wg mopeds, water sports (not the pee type!) etc

Oh and tell him to have fun in a great place!!!
