"This is sad to see, but it’s been reported today. You would think our society would be more tolerant now of trans people?" I saw this and whilst irs sad, I also wondered if it’s the way the crime has been classed has changed, ie instead of just assault on a person, it’s changed to a protected characteristic. If you know what I mean? Btw I’m not having a go or anything.

"The deeper question is whether it is truly up ... but more reported The number of actual crimes may not have increased significantly Trans people in the past may have been less keen to report hate crimes against them as they were less inclined to publically show who they truly are " I think the fact that it's becoming more acceptable to be trans these days that there are more of them out and about

I guess the stats have seen an increase in racist, homophobic and sexist crimes. On the other hand I do believe there’s a greater acceptance of differences and diversity in other parts of society too. Dare I say, the better parts of society? And with that happy thought, have a great day

"Now please hear me out. The fact that it’s higher is probably a positive sign, to me it shows that trans people are more comfortable with themselves and society that they can report the crimes with less fear than say 10 years ago. Surly that’s a good thing ( not the crime bit of course ) I’m guessing aswell the trans community has increased over the last 10 year also In today’s society, when it comes to race, sexuality and tolerance I strongly disagree if people say it’s getting worse compared to 5, 10, 50 or 100 years ago Any crime is not acceptable " But also ... as suggested above ... the way that crimes are classified has changed .. previous reports may not have been classified as hate or phobic crimes

"The deeper question is whether it is truly up ... but more reported The number of actual crimes may not have increased significantly Trans people in the past may have been less keen to report hate crimes against them as they were less inclined to publically show who they truly are " Also less likely to declare they are transgender when reporting a crime. Sometimes it's completely unrelated to their sexyality and so confusion may occur as to the reasons. There's always the question of the agendas behind some list compilation too.

"What a shame that society declares that we can’t just be who we are. It breaks my heart that in this day in age someone who desires a life outside of the traditional norm, is ridiculed and abused for it. It doesn’t affect me directly but I do support those who it does. Thankfully I’m bringing my children up in a way where they can fight the bias and be themselves. I just hope that once they’re set into the world on their own they cope. S " Isn't this the same for any person, animal, idea or system that is different from traditional norm. One can argue it is part of the evolutionaey process, 'a norm', in the system of chaos of change. Interesting use of words, "who we are", wanting Identity acceptance, and yet completely against labels. Is this not part of the perpetual confusion?

"Is this an inevitable consequence of the very heated debates that have taken place between representative bodies of both feminists and transsexuals?" Definitely will have its consequences and used by those who want to just cause any trouble, some of which may have no personal association, they're opportunist trouble makers.

"Is this an inevitable consequence of the very heated debates that have taken place between representative bodies of both feminists and transsexuals?" Might be. Only two weeks or so ago did a trans woman get charged by the police for attacking a feminist.

"police are now warning and arresting people for thoughtcrime against trans people and that is included in the statistics now so no wonder they have increased https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/outhouse-east-essex-views-on-transgender-people-1-5885494" In all fairness the police did back down and apologise, however it’s very Orwellian to think they will arrest for expressing a view.

I’m not saying it isn’t bad, not at all. But I do think context is required." Yep that’s very bad if you consider 95% of these crime are committed by men

"The bigger question is why 95% of violent crime is committed by men. " Where did you get you figures from or did you mis read the poster above you? Me! So no I didn’t misread the poster above! I worked for many years in criminal justice. 95% is about right for both, although possibly higher for violent crime. The figures will be in the ONS. Ask yourself this: the male prison population is about 82k, women about 4k. Taking into account the reticence of courts to to send women to jail, this is still a huge disparity.

" Primary reason why violent crime is higher with men is because men are more violent. This is due to many factors, some natural, some cultural. Doesn't surprise me one moment. Same reason why % of successful attempted suicides are far higher with men than women. Reason, women usually use methods that shout out they want help and don't want it to succeed, so use methods that are less likely to end in death, whereas men tend to use more finality methods which are more violent and so success rate is very high.

In the 80’s where I grew up there were only small pockets in certain towns and cities where it was accepted to be gay, trans etc etc - now most people don’t bat an eyelid - and rightly so! Unfortunately there’ll always be nasty, aggressive people who just want an easy target to pick on! These ‘targets’ will often include those smaller and weaker, the mentally ill, feminine gay guys and trans people! Sadly bullies aren’t going to pick on people who look bigger, stronger and more confident than themselves! What I’m saying is - there’ll always be shits - but maybe trends shift occasionally as to who the shits decide to victimise?

To say men are more violent and therefore commit more violent crimes, missed the point. It almost absolves men of responsibility. It’s up to society as a whole to provide an environment where violence doesn’t flourish. Unfortunately, and again this often comes down to men, we all to often celebrate violence.

"The bigger question is why 95% of violent crime is committed by men. Perhaps because men don’t report instances of being the victims " Men are far more likely to be the victim of violent crime. Unfortunately that crime is most likely to have been committed by a man. So in answer. Men do report it.

" Not sure it misses the point and definitely doesn't absolve or give any excuse at all. We are all responsibile for our choices and actions. Society which has become very liberal and snowflakey unfortunately continually gives excuses all the time. Diminished responsiblity is a trump card used all the time.

"There has been an increase in recorded hate crime generally. The trans category is no exception." I'll agree with you. Think a lot of it is reflective of society towards the nanny state which lines their own pockets and strips any dignity which many struggle to hold on to.

You would think our society would be more tolerant now of trans people?" are you saying that all crime is targeted at transgender because I just read this There were 21,484 such offences that came before the courts ...that is Knife crime alone and that report was made in March 2019. It did not say how many knife attacks had been made on transgender though

"It's depressing news but also reflective of moves in our society, on a wider level. The influences of the harder right factions haven't been particularly good for many minorities and hatred against people, who are no threat whatsoever to perpetrators of hatred, has been fomented in this country and others. Hate crimes should be classified as such - public servants who don't do this aren't helping the public that they exist to serve. There may be a small effect now, that more people are self-confident enough to be able/want to report such acts of aggression. We should be very critical of those who initiate and influence hatred and intolerant of anyone who doesn't work to sustain a safer environment for everyone. Any injustice is a harm against us all, damaging the wellbeing of society at large." Do you think it’s worse now ? Or 5 years 10 years or 20 years ago ?

I think it is more to do with some people pushing back against what they see as "political correctness", aided and abetted by some of the ugly political rhetoric they hear and read. "Take back control" can mean different things to different people, especially when spoken by people who in the same breathe also demonise migrants, LGBT, etc as being people of lesser value.

Look at any great social change throughout history and you will find people unable to accept it. The abolition of slavery, interracial marriage, the sex discrimination act etc. Even innocent things - the arrival in the UK from American in the early 20th century of ragtime dancing, for example - had the prudes jumping up and down, demanding such decadence should be banned. Each and every time, these people claimed society was going to hell in a handcart. Each and every time, society left the dinosaurs behind.

Will take time and some will never accept diversity or be tolerant but if they see their hatred will be dealt with if they express it verbally or physically then they will learn to keep it to themselves..

I don't believe the majority of men are violent " The problem is not that only a small portion of men are violent. The problem is that you don't know which ones are likely to be violent.
