"Does anyone else think this is a money for old rope type of profession?" Not quite sure what you mean with your question OP? If you’re asking if life coaches are needed today, yes I think they are. Most people are lonely. Can’t ask anyone real for advice so often turn to the internet where it’s so easy to be overwhelmed. A life coach fills this gap.

"It really depends on what you mean. It may have overlap with psychology/ therapy, which is sorely underrated by a lot of people. " I totally get that . My daughter has a Doctorate in psychology . My point is and apologies for being so vague and a tad open with the question . But it seems anyone and his dog these days can call themselves a life coach . The courses seem very flimsy and two a penny .

"When did people become so detached from their friends/family/social lives, that they feel paying a stranger to spout a few buzzwords is a better way to get through day to day life?" When the internet came along

"When did people become so detached from their friends/family/social lives, that they feel paying a stranger to spout a few buzzwords is a better way to get through day to day life?" I was in the Irish pub the other night watching a group of maybe 10 people who were drinking together. Each one was fixated on their phone. A lot of people are detached today. A lot cannot relate to their family. Personally I think anyone who has a family who they can talk to or turn to in need is very, very luck indeed

Like most of these bollocks professions; and I say profession very loosely, they started off in America. I doubt you need and relevant skills to be one and it would be quite easy to do if your inclined to keep the money train going.

I do appreciate not everyone had that good fortune . My life coaches without sounding crass were my Mum and Dad . I also have coffee most days with a 93 yr old gym member who gives me pearls of wisdom ,, and for free
