"It's all very noble and I'm as much an advocate of ridding the planet of as much plastic as possible. BUT, the damage has already been done, what we do no is the equivalent of a drop in the ocean towards undoing the damage caused. " Whilst it's true we can't undo most of the damage, we can try prevemy further damage.

"So what are your thoughts? The world needs to radically change the way we use this material, no more throwing away single use plastic items.. It’s about time we stopped doing this" Its very easy to say this now but its too little too late IMO.. The phrase shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted springs to mind

" I actually disagree, I think whatever we do now can and already has had a positively impact. I come from a coastal area and the beaches are so much cleaner now than they were 10yrs ago. No doubt, in some places the damage is beyond repair, but it’s definitely not a lost cause. I try to shop at a zero waste shop as much as possible, I carry reusable bags everywhere I go, I buy loose fruit and veg and I pick up litter when I’m out and about. It is a drop in the ocean but if everyone changes just a few small habits it can have a massive impact.

"Why is the onus on the consumer? I recycle all my waste and pay the local authority to dispose of it responsibly. Its them thats not honouring the contract." Exactly this. Sadly companies won't do it until it works for their profits. Big companies have been caught dumping chemicals into natural water, because getting a fine once every few years is cheaper than paying for safe disposal

"This knowledge has been around for decades it's people not doing it until it's too late! Where were all the advocates 40 years ago? Oh let me guess ... throwing their plastic away willy nilly ... " To be fair, I doubt that most people (me included) thought that we "recycled" our plastic by throwing it in the sea, or that when we sent it abroad to be recycled they just burnt it. Now it's common knowledge consumers can vote with their wallets and opt to shop without plastic, but also manufacturers need to either invest more in recyclable plastics or just use less packaging.

" Has anyone tried to drink a milkshake/slushy type drink with a cardboard straw it’s rank and you need 2/3 to actually finish the drink - more waste...... " Agree with most of what you said except this, personally and I know most people who don’t have any issue using paper straws. I can probably count on one hand the amount of times my straw has become knackered and that’s because I’ve just left it in my drink for a while as I don’t tend to drink until after I’ve ate.

I had a very very manly mojito slushy at the weekend - could have been a “cheap” supplier of straw tbh... but they kept failing, and it really boiled my piss asking for a new one

I have no issue with the ones they hand out in Maccies but some people do so maybe I’m either not as fussed or I’m doing something wrong (or right) haha.

"Without plastic what will the majority of things we use in every day life be made out of going forwards? Car dashboards, the back of your TV, the pen you're using, the housing for the vast majority of your appliances, we can't do away with it without a replacement...." If you can make underwear out of bamboo I'm sure they can make a pen...

"Certain plastics can't be recycled if they reduce the amount that they produce and recycle the rest it would help, The amount of waist that goes to landfills has reduced by a huge amount in the last few years " Has it? Or did they ship it to other countries

"I actually think the UK is quite good with plastic usage compared to other places in Europe. I'm in tenerife now and the supermarkets have plastic for everything. Disposable Plastic gloves to select fruit and bread items rather than the reusable tongs we have in England. Then obviously bottled water. Cans of pop have plastic attaching them together. Plastic round most food items etc etc " misguided McDonald’s look at the plastic single use items, they stopped the straw, yet all lids are plastic, Fruit, meat, veg, all in plastic packaging, vertically everything now is vacuum packed, most electrical goods are using foam or plastic wrapping. Costa coffee and Starbucks use plastic lids Why can’t we have porcelain cups you but that have tubber re useable lids that fit their machines??? It’s virtually everywhere!! Jiffy bags, sweets, pet food multi packs all plastic wrapping Not necessary!!!!

I live in a village I'm lucky enough to have local farm shops where i can get fresh food in paper bags, take my own containers for products etc but even without that the UK are found much better than other places

" Not sure about China but recently one of South East Asian countries, discovered that tonnes of plastics are being sent (without proper authorisation) over to the country from the UK and now are sending them back. Another neighbouring country received from Canada, and is trying to send them back as well.
