Laptop abroad

I connect to the internet via a dongle and stupid as this sounds can I do the same abroad and are the charges the same.Ta

think you should be ok at some wifi hotspots, but think using a network dongle would be the same as mobile phone charges (never tried so not for sure certain)

I think the answer here is no. Its a mobile phone connection basiclly so if you take it abroad will cost you more to connect to your providers signal. The best bet perphaps would be to buy a pay and go dongle when you get abroad?

I would check with your provider, but as said previously I think it works like a mobile phone. You will have to pay roaming charges, which could be quite expensive.

In this case you should use wi-fi. Depending where you are, there is free internet which you can dial in. E.g. hotels, cafes, libraries.

If you're staying in a private house and they're using broadband there, ask them if you can use theirs by dialling into theirs.

It will cost you a fortune using your UK dongle abroad, been there, done that, got the bills to show for it.

Same applies to surfing the net using your own phone.

If you're staying in a decent hotel you should be able to pay to use their network on a weekly or daily rate. Much cheaper than trying to surf on your own dongle.

Places like Italy are a pain in the arse, you can't just go to McDonalds and use their free wi-fi like you would anywhere else, apparently it's forbidden for foreigners to do this.*

They have to text you the wireless key, but will only do it to an Italian registered SIM card. You can only buy one of those if you have ID registered to an Italian address...

I just coughed up on camp-sites for their on-site wi-fi (and resented the outrageous charges. I did, however, let all and sundry know how much my grandfather enjoyed his time in Italy in 1944, and how he shot loooooads of Italians. In the back as they ran away, obviously.)

Ahem, you might want to try a pre-pay package with someone like Boingo.com

Most Mc Donalds around the world have free wifi and can usually be accessed from their carpark, but they limit availability of websites so Fab is out,so if you want a big mac it'll have to be in a bun.

To access Fab go to KFC, free wifi and no restrictions

Think using a dongle abroad is expencive.

Thats what we do for about 30 euros and then top it up the next time we are abroad.

loads of bars and resteraunts have free wifi for customers , thats why you see loads of customers having 1 cup of coffee all day. Also out of town shopping centers also have free wifi zones , useually the dongles connections here in Spain arent so good
