You should check out the British trumpeter Guy Barker if you are not familiar with him. He is so incredibly expressive. His rhythms, notes, phrases etc. are just amazing. He can blast through a swinging tune or melt you with a ballad.

My favourite album of his is What Love Is and my favourite track is Crazy She Calls Me (which is one of my Desert Island Discs). There are also great versions of The Things We Did Last Summer and Angel Eyes, and Sting makes an appearance too.

I have a love affair with Chet Baker. I met a lover in a small jazz bar in Beijing in 1995 whilst Let’s Get Lost was playing. There’s also a Chet link between the two of our names. Good shout for Chet.

What about his singing? I personally think he really should have stuck to playing his trumpet. I know I'm not alone.

Oh superb!! It really depends on who’s on and what sounds you like. Vortex, Ronnie Scott’s, Jazz Cafe, Bull at Barnes - but great artists on at Barbican and Southbank etc. Oliver’s Jazz Bar, The White Lion, Hideaway, The Jazz at Pizza Express too! Jam Circus, Effra Hall, The Junction. And then there’s venues that do one off amazing gigs like St Paul’s having Jan Garbarek, or at the Crypt or Union Chapel. Or any Arts cafe/community set ups. Best tip I do, follow your artists of choice on songkick and get nudged for where they’ll be (but you’ll know that as a gigger!)

Oh man! What a thread!

I recommend Silvershine by Andy Hamilton and the Bluenotes.

He was musical director in a hotel owned by Errol Flynn and then did the same on his yacht. He was a lovely guy who played sax every week at my local jazz club. Sadly he died a few years ago but his music lives on. I was lucky to chat to him a few times and a humbler man you could never meet. RIP Andy

I appreciate you.

I know nothing about Jazz music at all, unless you count the soundtrack of the Princess and the Frog and I doubt that!

Oh wow thanks for sharing. It's all about the sax! Love it. A very cool thread indeed.

I take my Dad to a jazz night at a local social club once a month

Live band and a usual audience of 20-25, all of whom out age me by some years

Dad enjoys it though and it's his only chance for a couple of pints

By default I enjoy it too

In terms of songs, I seem to be drawn to this on youtube ...
