I'm in a thoughtful mood, for a change. Do first impressions count on here? Has your mind been changed by messaging someone, meeting at a big social or interacting with them in the forums?

Sorry I meant that sometimes someone makes a good first impression but then you see them in a different environment and their true personality comes out.

On the other hand I met people at a social whose messages I'd deleted because of crap profiles but they were actually just my type.

I sometimes feel like a fraud. I am much more confident on here with messages so when I meet in person I'm usually quieter to start with. That's why I wondered about different impressions x

Yes and no.. I didn’t look twice at Ste’s profile and my first interaction with him was an argument about something he wrote that I misunderstood.. we ended up talking about something completely unrelated and realised that we just clicked..seen him every week for the last few months and adore him.

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

First impressions always count to sone degree, regardless of the setting.

My opinions have often been changed by interacting with people on the forums and at socials. Sometimes for the better, sometimes worse.

In person I can tell an awful lot about a person on first impressions and I'm very rarely wrong. Via messaging and forums, it's much harder, although the words and phrasing that people use are often an insight.

I found that with enough posting I got a good impression of whether I would 'get on' with people and the socials that I went on proved that. Although that's not really 'first impressions', via the forums its more a case of patience and reserving judgement.

We’ve found this when we’ve met people at clubs, who going on their profiles we wouldn’t have given a second look - crap pics and/or no text

One of the reasons we don’t really arrange meets solely through messaging on here - it’s at times impossible for people (some) to get their personalities across online

.

My first impressions can change a lot through meeting someone or reading their forum interactions - sometimes for the better, sometimes the worse. I know that quite often I can ascribe tone or meaning to the written word and then decide that's what someone is like so I try and be mindful of any strong confirmation bias I might have of people.

First impressions count on here, though think you still have to be open minded, if your lucky enough to meet face to face that’s when your personality can shine through, which isn’t always easy to project when messaging on here

Away for Christmas

First impressions should always count for something, without a good/decent first impression things rarely every lead to a second impression etc.

With that said, as somebody who is judging based on a first impression you should always be mindful that a first impression is not the whole story or the whole person, and should be open to people being much more (for the better) than their first impression. Of course there is always the other side to that, a good first impression does not always mean the following ones will be good.

First impressions count but its difficult to make any kind of impression on here or any forum. Anyone that has met me seems to be pleasantly surprised that im not some kind fucking idiot. I hate my pics, I've rewritten my profile 1000 times and still cant come across the way i should. Im the same with job interviews. I take people with a grain of salt and hope people do the same with me. They dont, but i can hope

So glad we met though and grateful to the twat who thrust us together

I don't think you can tell much at all from how ppl act in the forums because it's USUALLY all just about how ppl want to be perceived, so ppl create a persona, like all the fakebook happy family and gym going, food cooking shite. It's only when you take the time to engage and open up yourself that you get to reality and work out if you're compatible.

First impressions are important of course, however it is hard to get a true reading of someone online.

I have had my mind changed by meeting someone in person who I didn't necessarily 'get' online.

I have had it the other way round too, thought someone was really nice going by the first impression but after close monitoring realised i don't really like them at all.

Sometimes I think a forum persona is an arse, sometimes or not I am proved wrong but it has never been a definite from initial impressions. It's a hard question to answer if truth be told and I can't answer until I have met the person in front of me.

Ummmm, depends, I think a lot of fabbers don't actually want to be themselves, some aren't even capable and some use fab as an escape from the real world. I'm shit with text myself, I'm unintentionally insensitive and always putting my foot in it, I work with ppl for a living so I'm much more "me" and personable in person. I've studied this shiz at work and research has found that verbal communication adds up to about 7% of your total expression. Non-verbal (body language) and para-verbal (tone etc) communication make up the rest of your expression and you can't convey them on a forum.....

I try

First impressions count to me and I will be guided by that initially but they’re not always my lasting impressions. Opinions can change over time once you’ve got to know someone in whatever way. Only once or twice have my first impressions changed negatively though.

First impressions do count yes, it defines further interaction virtual or in person. My judgement usually serves me correct when it comes to like / dislike / tolerate. Likewise as others have said, upon meeting, people can appear to be very different to their online persona (except where it sticks out like a sore thumb here!) sometimes good, sometimes not.
