What are my options?

Alphabetical by first or last name of author, or by title.

Colour of book spine.

Genre of book.

Ideas?

Hubby worked at a library for ten years so I’ve never had to organise our bookcase or DVDs

Height.

Arrange them so the first word of each title makes a sentence.

Turn them the wrong way and then it'll be like a lucky dip each time you pull one out.

mostly my bookcases are organised in chronological order.

I have one case that contains old and collectable first editions, and ones signed.

I have another case which only contains theological text books.

I now sound like a totally geeky book person - I'm not!

I'm the same. Some shelves are in the order of purchase. Then as they're read they move to other shelves, in order of completion.

That leaves gaps, so unread books occasionally get moved around to fill them.

Maths books are kept apart, as are computer books.

It's a complicated system, I'll be the first to admit. But my memory seems to work in a way that makes it work. If I want a book, I usually know where to find it.

If there was anyone else in the house we'd have to keep our books completely separate. The thought of the resulting chaos upsets me a lot more than it should.

I tend to go through phases of buying a certain author. So I keep the books by author, and how nice they look next to each other! Raymond Chandler next to Bernard Cornwell, next to Terry Pratchett...

As a kid my fave book shop was James Thins in Glasgow, the old books in the basement!

Mine will be by genre with subsections within the genre. So history/archaeology is (or will be) chronologically, cookery by cuisine etc. We first need to complete the room that houses them

There used to be a book shop like that in Birmingham city centre. It was sad when it closed. You could get old copies of commando and all sorts.

I’ll need to try and check it out, if it’s still in existence. The only good book shop I’ve found in Scotland is Mcnaughtan’s in Edinburgh.

Genre, Alphabetical by Author, then Reading rather than Chronological Order

If you want to do spine then do book jacket recovers

I used to go by author surname, then order of publication within each author's section. Then I got bored and separated them into genre, then author surname and publication order. I may go back though

Mine go from biggest to smallest, biggest near the wall from each side, and meet together at the tinies in the middle.

Stack them on a table desk window ledge top of the fridge etc
