My rear main seal is leaking on my Corsa D. Is it expensive to replace and what time scale can it be replaced?

Rear main crank seal... not really difficult, abit time consuming as gearbox has to come off ect. If its not leaking that bad live with it untill it needs a clutch

Ok thanks. The MOT brought up an advisory of an oil leak on the engine and I got it checked today and the woman at the garage said it was leaking from the rear main crankshft seal. Is it something to worry about as I do lots of long distance driving?

It's a hefty bill to get fixed, alot of labour cost more than anything....taken the transmission and most engine apart, you can buy products for a quick fix.....but it's not surprising if you do alot of miles...look online for the products cost about 30 quid if that....

Just make sure you keep an eye on your oil levels.

If it's just an advisory, I wouldn't be too worried about it, but just make sure you get it done before next years MoT.

As has been said, best time to do it would be when replacing the clutch, as the flywheel will have to come off to get to it.

I'm weird when it comes to things like this lol. I like to make sure I get work done on the car before they become a bigger and more expensive problem.

Exactly if you leave it it will only cost in the long run....you can do it yourself without taking the transmission out if you have the time....

Its very common on those especially the 1300cdti.

Vauxhall in general are troublesome.. leaky buggers too. It could be the rear of the sump seal, the seals are 2 part on those (stupid gm engineers)

Keep a eye on the oil... generally on vauxhalls the 1.6 petrol & 1300cdti the average consumption is 1L per 1000 miles which is criminal. They usually blow oil past the rings.

You cant. Gearbox has to come off as the gearbox slides into the crank to make drive. You struggle on the corsa d for room. You need ramps really and need to drop the subframe & engine & box down.

Honestly id just live with it. You looking 400+ to do that plus parts.

I'm not mechanically minded so I would just mess it up if I tried myself. I got quoted £200 plus the cost of the seal to get the job done. In my past experience, cheap options are not all ways the best

Thats very cheap... sure its not just the rear sump gasket at that price?

I told him the problem and he said he would have to drop the gearbox to replace it so i'm assuming it's the rear main crank seal. I think I will just wait until I get a new clutch put in and kill two birds with one stone as they say.

Id stick some "Lucas motor stop leak" in it. And if it still leaked, I'd just carry on topping it up. At least the oil would be clean...

I've put some engine oil stop leak in and waiting to see if it has worked. I also got a reasonable quote to replace the rear crankshaft seal and get a new clutch fitted at the same time. Thanks for all the help and advice.
