If you've never been on skis or a snowboard before, head to your nearest indoor slope. Gives you an idea of which you'd prefer and if you even like it.

A holiday is a lot of money if after day one you hate it.

This is the thing I'm a complete beginner, only done dry slope and this was in my teens

I was thinking France but out the two I don't know which is the best. My French is poor

A lot depends on your budget. Factor in the cost of lunches and western Europe can add up quickly.

Bulgaria does offer a lot of value for money for beginners as you won't "ski out" the resort in your time, plus you'll get morning and afternoons whereas France etc only give you half day lessons

The best ratio of price to quality is Austria by a good way. Huge choice of resorts and accommodation for all levels of competence and budget. Instructors all have great English. Lots of places have pretty well guaranteed snow.

Pas de la Casa - Andorra. Whilst I was regular skier pre-kids each season going to Tignes , France, I plummed for Andorra to introduce the kids to the sport - far cheaper and excellent ski school for the kids and we always had good snow.

We had a great time in mayrhofen, Austria.

Plenty of runs for all abilities, plenty of bars and restaurants in town and wasn't overly expensive.

I personally love Tignes! You can buy a ski pass that covers the whole Espace Killy so that includes Tignes and Val d’Isere.

It’s not the cheapest but no where in France is cheap really.

I’ve done two winters seasons there and some time in summer including this summer. It’s a beautiful place and a very friendly resort.

The only downside is that due to it being so high and hardly any trees whiteouts/bad weather days are common and can be a real pain in the ass!

We're off to Andorra in January.

Been over most of Europe, but this is new to us.

Ski packs and lessons for the sprogs are amazingly cheap, and they get morning and afternoon classes

Just looking for some relaxed reds, with the odd minor challenge.

Tignes le lac...bit cheaper than Val De Ser..but you have the same access to the slopes..

Or brevieres....but we always went over to La Daille, Fornet or Solaise as you say. Next lifts over there too now!

Trouble with going over to Val on bad weather days is if they close the lifts your screwed! We managed to get a lift back once...

Off to Borovets again next year. 2 trips booked in January and March. Love the place as we've got to know it so well. Apres Ski is the best.

Going skiing in Norway (Beitostolen) at end of Feb, with a group of friends.

Booked early, so flights and accom are cheap enough but the 140 mile transfer from Oslo for 14 people, is proving a bit pricey.
