Got my first ink on Friday so looking for people's top tips on caring for it.

It's still covered in the film they put on, that comes off tomorrow morning.

As mine hasn't shown sign of scabbing even though it's been 3 weeks since I've had it done!

I know everyone's healing times are different, but good to read on different experiences

Yes they gave me Bepanthen but just curious to hear other people's advice.

It's lots of colours and quite fine detail so was told the this particular film is to stay on that long.

North west ish

Keep the cling film on til I get home. Then bepanthan for 2 weeks. Always ensuring the skin is kept moist with it during this period. (just a little bit cos its v thick) from the day after tattoo done I wash each day gently with simple body wash (no scrubbing) flaking usually occurs around day 3/4. Longer term I apply palmers coco butter.Has worked for me and I have a few.

Some tatts don't scab, mine only had a fine layer so it's hard to notice. That's a good sign though. Means it's not too deep.

You should never keep it covered that long. I have some detailed tats and the advice has always been covered till home then wash it. Pat dry and cream.

I went to one tattooist that wouldn't cover at all as said it needs the air.

You can buy a soap free cleanser from the pharmacy its a foam. I would wash twice daily minimum with that then a think layer of cream. I have a foot tattoo which can be hard to heal but had no problem with doing it that way

I have a few and different places suggested different regimes. I have been advised on three different occasions from artists to no longer use bepathen as the recipe changed and it can draw colour from the tattoo. I used hemp hand balm/cream from body shop and that worked wonders or the el gatro (cant remember the name) balm. Wash with non scented wash 2-3 times a day and pat dry and apply a small amount of cream to keep moist but not too wet

I take a long time to heal and the quickest one has been the hemp hand cream

I've had a few warnings about bepanthen recently, it would seem they changed the ingredients not so long ago and some people find it can leach the colours out.

Personally it's always cover for 2 hours, although my sternum I was told to cover for 24 hours due to location and the risk of boob age rubbing it. Then wash a few times a day gently with antibacterial hand wash.

I then use nourish ink cream for a week or so, and then switch to cocoa butter or coconut oil.

Make sure you don't scratch, to alliviate itching, cool air or cold compress works, or scratch the area next to it instead.

Don't go swimming and don't submerge in water until its healed (showers are fine but don't soak it)

Once healed, do as you please, protect from the sun and enjoy your ink!

Bedfordshire.

I used tattoo goo. All natural ingredients and an antibacterial soap. Didn’t have any scabbing but everyone is different.

"

That has to be the worse advice ever. Congealed blood, germs, no air getting to it.

Get the film off after 2 hours max, wash it, cream it with what ever your tattooist advises. Mine has stopped advising bepathan since they changed the formula last year. Now recommends raw cocoa butter.

Ive 22, Bepanthon yes. Dont lather it on though. Keep it clean, soapy water, pat it dry (don't rub it), and a thin layer of bepanthon.

Is it the sticky film? I've had that for 24 hours but then it was rolling off. It did protect it while it was still very sore though.

I want another one now.

I know there is lots of conflicting advice much of of contradictory but I have never heard of anyone leaving a film on for 3 days

You need to get it off and washed now in my opinion

Speaking as a tattooist,

The only real reason for yr tattoo to be covered. Is to stop blood getting on yr clothes as it continues to bleed for a short while after.plus it stops any dirt etc getting into an open wound.

It only needs to be on for a couple of hours.

Any tattooist should give you aftercare instructions.

As for aftercare cream.

Everyone is different.

So for example e45 cream may work for one person. Not another.

New creams on the market are designed for the soul purpose of tattoos. Like tattoo goo.

Google tattoo aftercare.

If I went into it here. It would be stupidly long.

But it's really very simple.

I don't think its a standard cling film he's covered it with there are a few new things some tattoo artists use now. I've always used bepanthen but my last few tattoos the artist gave me a cream they use and it was amazing. Can't remember the name of it though?

what works for one may not work for the next

when i have ink, usually keep it covered for 2-3 hours top, wash it down with a unscented soap, pat dry with a towel (if not bitty) place some cream on sparingly, reapply a few times a day. I admit i usually smother it on for first few days then apply it sparingly and never had issues

My last one was several years ago and it was cleaned by the tattooist and then clingfilmed until i got home as its effectively an open wound. Once home slowly peel off the film and wet the area with warm, not hot, water, then lather up some clearasil, not the one with grit in it, cleanse the area gently and then rinse with warm water, pat dry with a towel that isnt too fluffy, then apply a thin covering of Bepanthan. Repeat 3 or 4 times a day until any scabbing you have comes away. Do not use anything oil based such as Vaseline as this can draw the ink out. Once the tattoo has shed its scabs you will have silverskin, thats the new skin thats formed, no creaming is required for this but protection fron the sun is still advised. During healing avoid full sun and dont go swimming as the chlorine draws the ink out. The deeper the needle goes the more scabbing you will have. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give you as much info as i could.

I most most have offered great advice, really surprised that to were told keep it covered with the original wrap for so long . With all of mine I kept the original wrap for about 2 hours before cleaning with warm water then apply the cream and wrapping again then repeating the process each morning for a couple of days to stop clothing rubbing the area.

Well as an update soaked it off this morning and it's looking great!

I have _some_ wound care experience so the film was a medical grade second skin and I was treating it like a burn which you need to keep covered at all costs.

As it was breathable the moisture from the tattoo exudate had dried away and all that was left underneath was discoloration from the expelled ink which washed off with Sanex's 0% cleaner.

So while I appreciate everyone's concerns about the time covered ny tattooist knew what he was talking about.

Really was now asking about the products used as again everyone will have their own tips and tricks. Will be looking for that soap free foam to clean with.

Leeds + Newcastle

It's called wet healing to keep it covered and a lot of people swear by it globally.

Don't panic
