Good ideas guys, the car will do 25000 miles a year. The dogs are Alaskan shepherds. Looked at the Passat , C5 Citroen, Volvos out of our budget and I had an Audi and wouldn't force one on an enemy lol. Looking to spend about £12k

Tested an Insignia but not big enough

seconded with this, but get the 530D instead of the 535, one less turbo to go pop if you did buy one when its on the way out, and with the dogs lying down you'll be able to comfortable get round most tractors given a short stretch of straight!

I can vouch for the Volvo V70 and they come with built in dog guards also the Galaxy is simply massive in the boot if you drop the 2 back seats down or if you want, drop the middle seats down and you can get a double bed in ??

I have a Renault Scenic, not the most popular car in the word, but with the seats down or out the boot is huge. Its only a 1600 petrol and runs great round town and on the motorways. (not the best handling car across country though).

Had two Renault Scenics second was the Grand had seven seats. With all back seats down we got a stand up freezer in the back.

"Trying to buy a big booted estate car for 2 big dogs. Not that they can drive lol any suggestions?"

Budget? Manual/auto? Do you go into cities that have emissions/age restrictions? Would it be just you & the dogs in it normally? 2 or 4wd?

I mean, if it's just you & the dogs, a Fiat Panda/Punto with the seats folded would do the job..

Volvo V70 is hard to beat if you want loads of room, capable of very high mileages, reliable, & can be got for £500-20,000. Mk1 Vauxhall Zafira is surprisingly reliable if looked after. Galaxy/Sharan Mk1 petrol`s are very spacious & generally reliable, but the auto`s can be a problem. Alfa 156 & 159 estates are great fun, but reliability can be hit & miss..

There's loads of Japanese & Korean estates that are reliable & generally overlooked on the used market, so cheap.

I had a Volvo V70, nice big boot and looked good (r design spec) . Those are big dogs, so you'll need a bit of height too. Don't discount something like the Kia Sedona or the ford galaxy/s max.

Ok, just read this!

I wouldn't touch anything French or German personally, just too many reliability issues, usually electrical with French stuff, & any VAG car is quite literally designed to start failing in big ways at 5-6 years old. BMW 5 is a good call, as long as it's been looked after, Mercs are nowhere near as good as they once were.

A £12k budget but the V70 is out of your budget? £12k gets you a very nice 4yo V70, or a Jaguar XF Sportbrake, Toyota Avensis/Prius/Auris, Kia Optima etc

Had a C5 for 8 yrs, 2.2 hdi, bullet proof engine never had issues with electrics, sold it on at 260,000 and going strong and bought another. As far as electrics and reliability, a lot is dependant upon the models, mostly unfounded on bigger Citroen's and Peugeots, had a 407 for years, bought it with about 150,000 on the clock and ran it without any electrical issues, it was the front tyres it ate up and front bushings, very different from the Renaults thought who are the electric gremlin wizards.

Toyed with a series 5 estate, great value considering their initial cost, but unlike the other two I mentioned if anything goes wrong, then you're paying a big chunk of purchase price of the others. The ford is probably the biggest boot of all.

If you want height, space go anywhere why not consider a Small car for general use and then for about 3000 you can get nice TD5 Disco with cool spring conversion from airAG's already done, you'll not loose any money if you find one used only for school runs and waited underneath. It'll still be on the road in 20 yes running well, unlike anything else mentioned so far.

All depends on what you want. There's only good and better options hardly any real bad ones if you think outside the box too.

Look for ex plod vehicle, many dog estates with built in cages and air-con for them

"Citroen C5

"

I bought a brand new 2008 Subaru Forester 2.0litre petrol (non turbo).

It has a very spacious square loading bay ideal for dog crates and large dogs. Lovely to drive and easy to handle an excellent all round 4x4 with high and low ratio. A bit thirsty but careful driving improves the mpg to about 34mpg.

Have had it since new, done 80,000 miles now 11yrs old. Apart from tyres, brakes and an annual service it has never been a problem. The only other expense I have had, was to replace was the original exhaust this year for its 11th MOT.

Best motor I have ever had.
