One a man, the other a woman.

Should the man cross the street so as the woman doesn’t think he’s a threat to her?

Do men have a responsibility to put women at ease in this way?

No responsibility too but I would anyway - not that an empty street is gonna make much difference to stopping someone crossing it again I guess

Nah. The person walking behind could make a sound to let the other person know that they’re there though. That’s polite

I hate to say it, but I now change my route when finding myself in this situation, fortunately I live in little village in Devon and women walking around without a shotgun/riding crop/pack of beasts laughingly called relatives late at night is rare

this, as a woman i would prefer to know they are there than have them quiet behind me.

If the girl was coming towards me I would walk in the road to give plenty of room whilst passing, if I was coming from behind (ahem) I would whistle loud or something lol so she was aware I was there

I first fell a little for someone when he told me that he thought it was important to be mindful of this and he would consciously cross to ensure he wasn’t a cause of worry.
