So I’ve just been for my smear which is always a pleasant experience- not ! But for a few minutes of discomfort it’s one of the most important things us ladies can do for ourselves, so ladies do you always get yours done regularly?

Yes. I'm about due actually.

It's not nice, but it's hardly the worst thing in the world.

I was too young to get mine done, even though I requested it five times.

But I’m now getting one after I’ve given birth.

Yup. Mine's mostly a bit pinchy, and for me there are few weirder feelings than scr@ping around in my cervix, but sure beats the alternative.

I used to have them every 6-12 months die to past issues and it was good having that reassurance everything was good

Then after 15 years they switched me to 3 years, absolutely dreading the next one later this year as been so long.

Bn getting smears since i was 18 and never found them uncomfortable. However my last 2 have bn really painful and last time i bled for 4days after it. Is this maybe due to now having a coil fitted?

I’ve got a coil and I don’t think it was any more uncomfortable but it feels quite sore now !

And also as a post menopausal woman the last time i had a smear test, my gp had a hard time finding my cervix as apparently it moves when you no longer need it for reproductive purposes

Yes. One of my friends died from ovarian cancer. She had put off her smear and ignored her symptoms for a long time.

She made us all promise to look after ourselves.

My daughter is only 32 and recently had womens problems namely a discharge. Shes been in a relationship for 10 yrs but went for sti checks ..all came back negative. Whilst having the tests she was told to see her gp...worried us to say the least. Turns out she has an ulcerated cervix which can be caused by the pill. Apparently the pill can cause such problems...who knew.

We are still awaing the smear results.

I’m sorry to hear about your friend. I had an older work colleague die last year from cancer, she had never had a smear as she had never been with anyone and deemed not necessary

Unfortunately, which I only learnt recently, the smear only picks up the changes in your cervix. It doesn’t pick up other issues with the ovaries or upper womb.

It’s good to learn and know the symptoms for the other areas too and never ignore them always best to get checked out.

I was more than one or 2 years overdue for mine, and I got to the point I was too scared to go in case the results brought bad news. I went a few months back now, and all clear thankfully.

Scotland - Aberdeen

I have to have mine every six months and had mine 2 weeks ago (I was about 6 months overdue) just waiting for the results.

They are normally pain free, but the nurse had a student nurse in with her, so I think she was a bit over zealous with the spectrum and how wide she went to get a decent view
