"I haven’t seen it but was it really more OTT than those celebrations displayed by Male players?" I thought it was...The striker who scored 5 times especially was counting how many times she had scored on one hand showing disrespect to Thailand....

"Not seen it but isn't it just a case of sore losers?" The Thailand womens team haven't been complaining about their thrashing...Most of the complaints have actually been coming from other sports men and women in the USA...

"Is it wrong to over celebrate? The USA women's football team recently thrashed Thailand's women's team 13-0 at the world cup but have been accused of over celebrating and showing a lack of class... There is nothing wrong with celebrating scoring a goal but were their antics over the top and did the show a lack of respect to the opposition?... " basically whilst i don't tend to agree with running up the score (being top of their group avoid a really hard last 16 game), i can see why they did it... but the way they were celebrating at the end was a bit too OTT for me

"Not seen it but isn't it just a case of sore losers? The Thailand womens team haven't been complaining about their thrashing...Most of the complaints have actually been coming from other sports men and women in the USA... Why? Do they think its not in the spirit of the game. " As a sportsperson or team your celebration is an acknowledgement of being victorious in the competition, the key, I think is, ‘competition’ at 4-0 I guess the competition was over ... it is no longer competitive .... therefore celebration should match the achievement.

"I think because we as a nation are more reserved.....it's seen as bad taste...." Yes I agree but it seems to be more America's are annoyed by it, if twitter is anything to go by.

"I noticed since the 90s, the USA team can show very poor sportsmanship - world champs (athletic, swimming) and olympics. You can see the european athletes tend to shake hands with one another but the americans usually treats their competitors as enemy rather than fellow athletes. " Usually agree, but last night there was no gloating on show and indeed at end of game they genuinely seemed to be sympathetic to the Thai side and several went and commiserated with the Thai goalie

"They're Americans they over do everything" Especially when they win and like to show their opponents just how good it feels to win. Americans don't like to lose!

Not really, to me it was a sign of recognising that the opposition had tried their hardest but were not in the same class.

"I didn't see anything wrong with it. Let's put it like this, would this conversation be happening if we were talking about the men's game? Better still, what if the England men's team won by 13-0? If they'd done that there'd be headline news along the lines of "Pride of a nation!" and "Triumphant heroes!" and the like. There'd probably be a parade when they got home and possibly even knighthoods. Everyone would be saying how amazing the team was doing. Remember the last men's world cup and the easy route England had, yet still messed up, and how they were called heroes when they returned. That happened when they lost! I didn't see anything wrong at all with the women's USA team victory. They played well and celebrated accordingly. We're not reserved, we just don't like it when any team other than England wins or break records." If England's men's team had beaten Thailand's men team by 13-0 and the players had over celebrated I would have also started a thread about it for not being in the spirit of the game so this conversation would still have been happening as football has an ethos about fair play and bringing the world together...

That 13th goal could be that persons first ever goal. Their first goal after a long term injury or even after something worked on in training. I'd have a problem 8th it was junior sport. Nobody gains anything in a scoreline like that with kids. Allow the score to remain, you can't deny the result but don't report it in that manner. Report it as 5-0 so some kids don't get their confidence battered.
