Is it just me that feels like this is derogatory term?

Am I being too sensitive?

That’s why I’m asking. I don’t think the guy meant it in a derogatory way but to me it just makes me sounds like a dumb bimbo which I personally didn’t like.

I think any pet names (hun, babe, darling, sweetheart etc) being used depends on the context and circumstance - personally I very very rarely use them, and when I do it will be with people I know well enough to use them with.

And I think that last part is the key to whether they are appropriate or not - using them in a first message when you don't know someone is making a huge assumption and comes across very insincere - using them with someone that you have built a connection and rapport with and know well enough to feel comfortable using them, and comfortable that they will be well received, is somewhat different.

Very dependent on the person saying it as to which side or the sweet/derogatory divide it falls. Quite regional too in meaning. My auntie always greets me with "hi hun" as do a few people I know. Similar to 'hi luv' in my eyes which can either be good or bad depending on context.
