How fast do you have to run?

This is an old one and most probably know the answer to the question but...

Let's say you ran a 1 mile oval track at 3mph. How fast do you have to run the second lap for the average speed of both laps to be 6mph?

No idea, must have something to do with velocity as it's an oval track.

My boobs get in the way of running.

It probably took you longer to write it than for me to calculate

You might want to spend some more time calculating the answer

Can’t be 6*2=12-3=9, 9+3=12/2=6

2 miles at 6mph would take 20min.

A 1 mile lap at 3mph takes 20mins.

It’s impossible.

I think.

I have had quite a lot of lager though so I could be wrong.

"Infinite speed."

Infinite speed only decrease the gap average, but it will never be fast enough as there is literally 0 time to complete the second lap.

That’s what infinite speed means, that it takes 0 time.

No, because time is part of the equation. If you don't have time, it will never be possible to travel a distance, no matter how fast you go.

Infinite speed would only infinitely attempt to bridge the gap, but given there is no time for it to cover the distance, it would never reach the average.

well if yopu travelled at exactly the speed of light, time dilation at that speed would render the time taken to zero.

although according to special relativity it would also render the distance as zero so you wouldn't have travelled that far anyway.

not to mention your mass would become infinite and you would collapse the universe into a singularity

I don't recommend trying that

No it wouldn't. Time dilation is difference in perception of time by two observers who are travelling at different speed.

If you moved at the speed of light, the the time would slow down for you, but only you, the other observer would still see it normally.

3 mph is 1 mile in 20 minutes...

6 mph is 1 mile in 10 minutes...

6 mph is also 2 miles in 20 minutes...

Therefore the next lap must be run in zero seconds and as such the speed must be infinite miles per hour.

There isn’t a logical answer

You’d have to instantly complete the second lap

The simplicity of the question and complexity of the answer also proves that, the easier the question seems, the worse we are going to perform answering it.
