May bank holiday moved

I have just seen that the early May Bank Holiday (May Day) is being moved from the Monday to the Friday in 2020 to make it easier for those wanting to commemorate VE day.

I have no issue with people wanting to remember or celibrate VE day but I do feel it is a bit of offensive to appropriate another Bank Holidays away from people who have other beliefs and interests to do so.

Given this is due to be a one off and that the UK has a relatively low rate of public holidays surely this could have been given as an extra one.

Not really fussed, the end one in May is always a better bank holiday anyway. Imho.

Why do we still have bank holidays? Originally set up in the 1800s to allow banks to close as days of rest.

Now surely we should rename them public holidays. Most workers work a bank holiday anyway if in shop work or public services.

OP, I think it's a bit ironic that you complain that by moving the May Day bank holiday its appropriating the celebration from something else given that pretty much all current national holidays and celebrations are essentially appropriations of other appropriations of other beliefs and celebrations.

I tell you I'm still livid over the whole Saternalia thing. You won't get me celebrating Christmas in our house...

As i think most people use the bank holiday as an excuse for an extra day of drinking i doubt many people will mind

... if its moved from a monday to a friday as its still extending the weekend..

So when exactly was Saternalia celibrated as a public holiday? Given it wasn't how was the public holiday appropriated from it?

The whole repurposing of days sacred to older religions by newer ones is really a seperate issue.

Just a thought. Would it be beneficial to make armistice/remembrance day a national day of remembrance? Not a holiday but close everything with the emphasis people should take a day to respect the sacrifice and somewhat devastation of war. Maybe the next generation will learn the price of peace must never be forgotten or paid again

Well given that May Day's origins lay in the form of Spring Festivals seen throughout ancient Europe then I'd disagree with you.

My point being look at Christmas, Easter and most other bank holidays. At the time when the banking system wanted to select when they had days off they tended to align them with periods of celebration that already existed. And most of these periods of celebration are appropriations of previous celebrations from previous religions or societies.

I have to say that firstly British holidays should be about Britain not others. Secondly, that the date of a bank holiday doesn't effect people's ability to celebrate other things. May-Day is actually the First of May, the bank holiday is just on the first Monday because it was preferred to extend the weekend rather than close everything mid-week.

May Day holiday isn’t steeped in history, first one was in 1978, so it’s not like we’re moving A tradition

But I agree with OP, an extra day wouldn’t have been such a bad thing

Doesn't matter to me whether it is a Monday or a Friday. The outcome is likely to be the same - sex, drugs and rock n' roll
