Gonorrhea in over-65s rising at nearly double national average with divorce and dating apps blamed.

A 42% increase.

Did divorce incease over the last year? Did dating apps increase last year?

Or did erectile dysfunction drugs become available without prescription??? Hmmm.

As always my stock answer for these types of threads.. A few years ago a over 65 wouldn't consider getting tested. They would ignore symptoms and also a lot don't show symptoms.

Add to that men that have been in marriages for years hiding sexuality and there is your increase.

There is a increase in testing in the older generation.

Maybe its because now Jeremy Kyle is over, people of pension age have to find other things to do on a morning now

It could also be down to the over 65 not practicing safe sex as there isn't any chance of pregnancy.

42% is pretty much a step change. Has there been a step change in over 65 year olds getting tested?

I think that being able to get an erection has a huge influence on your ability to contract an STD. And that IS a step change.

To my knowledge they never could get pregnant. So why the increase?

I think what is interesting is that this is another portion of the population who are largely non-swingers.

Why do I say this? Because we keep getting quoted that bisexual men are 2nd high risk of STDs. My belief is that only 4% of the UK population swing but you would find more than 4% of bisexual men swing. Therefore this statistic is a comparison of swingers vs non swingers and pinning the verdict on bisexual men.

I have only seen one study, a Dutch study of incidence of STDs within yhe swinging community and in that study it was found that women (never mind all men) had a higher incidence of STDs.

Generally over 65 year olds don't have much idea about testing and safe sex. Their sex education would have consisted of an embarrassed pe teacher drawing a diagram on the board and people only went to the "clap clinic" if they'd caught something and trust me in the 70s they were pretty grim places. I would reckon that it's a combination of a lot of things including people who grew up in a time when things were becoming relatively more liberated reaching the 65 age bracket coupled with the lack of sexual health education. Add in to that partners dying, ED drugs becoming easily available and all the other factors mentioned and you have the right mix for the spread of STIs. It's also slowly becoming more acceptable for older people to actually be sexual.

When our parents were 65 they were old and frail and we suspect they'd given up sex. When we reached 65 we were still swinging happily, with friends and new people, and swinger-clubbing frequently. The reason for more STDs amongst this age group is that oldies like us are still sexually active and sexually adventurous, after all we were the 'summer of love' generation when the contraceptive pill became available for single women and we all took advantage of the freedoms and opportunities.

Brilliant! I hope I didn't come across as ageist. I have recently played with a number of ladies in their 50s and they have totally blown me away. Old and frail? Yup. But not them. Me. By the time they had finished with me!

I agree with a lot of this. I also think that the assumption that most men over 65 need medical help to maintain an erection is erroneous
