then why the hell are they taking extra days off, taking kids on non-educational trips (unless it's at the end of a term) and going on strikes all the time?

My son goes on non educational trips, usually to the pictures or macdonalds... he has asd but is high functioning.. it helps him and others and teaches them how to behave in public

The non educational trips are a learning experience and a decent teacher will k ow exactly how to add all the curriculum subjects in to a day out.

Out ward bound trips help to encourage children to try new things and push them to do things they would have never thought they coukd do . It's amazing to see

Education is not or should not be solely about preparing cloneike drones to pass sats or whatever they're called..

I'm not a teacher and suspect nor are you but I have 3 members of my close family who are and to be honest I would listen to them or other professionals in that area..

Anything can be educational, and sometimes putting things into a different context or making it memorable can cement ideas.

We're trying to create well prepared adults, not test takers.

Any trip can or should be educational. Depending on the teacher and the pupils then at that age you are always learning...or should be. Social skills are just as important as knowing your times tables. Lots of fab members may well know there times tables...but many a social meeting has taken place where unfortunately social skills are lacking!

The days of producing young people with only the ability to sit on a production line are long gone and if we as a country are to thrive in what is a rapidly evolving and diverse global economy then we need more than just lever pullers or thingamejig movers..

Strikes all the time? Can you support that argument? Not known any schools locally or even nationally that have striked in ages. It would make national news of was the case.

Schools up my way have been doing half day fridays for years now, they start earlier and finish later during the other days though

From what I've read so far on here, I've learned some interesting points about school trips which I definitely agree.

I can still remember a few trips I went on when I was at school and even though they were educational, they were also quite fun trips

We went to a graveyard for a primary school maths trip and calculated the ages of people from their dates of birth and death and tried to find the oldest and youngest. Fascinating.

And there's history in that too, thinking about how (long) people lived, types of families, methods of burial and funerary display, etc. Things you won't realise you're learning. Much more likely to stick than "between x year and Y year these were the trends in funerary monument blah blah snore"

I'm sure I did something similar to that when I was at Primary School.
