Does your organisation/company/employer have staff networks or diversity groups - eg. BAME (Black and Minority Ethnic), LGBT+, Women’s, Disability etc? This list isn’t exhaustive.

Any good?

Nope

I bite my lip. A lot.

I think that's why I come to the forums

It's a breeze in here compared to some of the places I've worked

There is a young girl at work who is marrying her (female) partner in the summer

It is the first time in my 25 years of work that I remember working with an openly LGBT person

Yes, it’s called Diversity and Inclusion, which I find slightly ironic since it consists on putting people into small groups.

It is also the first place I've worked where there is more than 1 token black person

Yeah mine does. Various groups working parents, religion ethnicity groups, LGBT etc. They hold regular talks throughout our offices and hold lunchtime events. I don’t personally go to any of them as I don’t usually have a lunch hour

I work in a very diverse workplace and we have groups for all the things you've mentioned, regular events, raising awareness, conferences etc.

Having said that, at the last women in management meeting I attended someone saw fit to decorate the board giving details of the guest speakers with loads of pictures of high heels Bit more work needed

My last place did. Whilst generally in favour of them I also found a lot of them to be toothless talking shops. If your fortunate enough to be in a unionised workplace then the trade union self organised groups are normally much better.

Ahh I wondered how long before the “how can network groups try to enhance integration through a strategy of occasional separation?”* criticism came up.

Podrick gets me my first bingo card cross off!

Society always seems a little uncomfortable with difference and organisations are no different - and by their very nature these groups typify that difference - but support to these often minority communities allows their voice to be heard and their differing perspectives which actually allows better integration for all - you could say.

Yes. Both companies I work for are enthusiastic about it.

The feedback suggests people feel empowered by the experience, which can only be a good thing in helping people to achieve their potential in the workplace.

Yes, pretty much every combination possible at my place. They do some really good things, but equally they do attract a lot of people without genuine interest in the subject and either want the recognition at year end (company big on getting people involved) or to escape actual work

Yes they do and it works well and people can have a sticker added to their desk and their pass back cover changed, for them to highlight which group they belong to. This part I find a little strange as if it is all about inclusion why would you actively label yourself in such a public way?

To attend one of the functions you don’t have to be of that “type” everyone is welcome

Mine has lots of networks covering all sorts of groups and they work well mostly. Like all these things though, you get out what you put into them.

I've only at worked a small companies. I think there's 16 people here, all white. If

I remember correctly, there has never been a disabled, gay, black or anyone else that would fit into any diversity group, at any of the companies I've worked at.

There is a mention of inclusion and diversity in the staff handbook but it's pretty much a box ticker.

All the isms are alive and thriving here, not so much amongst the staff but definitely in the ranks.

Yes, and it sucks all the fun out of interacting in the workplace because most people are terrified of inadvertently falling foul of the PC Police.

After the latest circulation I left the office on Friday wishing my non-gender specific colleagues a good weekend doing whatever non judgemental activities they chose in their self identified persona....
