I notice on here, from my own and others posts, that people are either overly sarcastic (a*** holes) or really nice and supportive. Why do people feel the need to be mean, if you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything.

The world would be a better place if we just all tried to be supportive.

It's a subtle form of bullying—and most bullies are angry, insecure, or cowardly. Usually emotionally hurtful language with one goal.

Interestingly the origins is Greek meaning to strip or tear off the flesh, Henze the phrase cutting sarcasm.

Sarcasm is often confused with Satire which IMO is irony, exaggeration. In some cases is ridicule but has the difference of trying to improve humanity by criticizing its follies and foibles rather the more negativity of sarcasm.

It's hard to spot the difference especially through txt with no facial information on display.

Because it's covered up. They have a dig and then try to rub it down with some smileys. Few know about the difference of sarcasm and Satire. Even fewer know how to serve it.

I think culture has an influence on the type of humour too. Some nations seem to have a sarcastic undertone in their humour and if one looks at their history its sometimes plagued with oppression and conflict. Not sure there's a Definite correlation but it's an interesting thought

I understood your reasoning and it's sound reasoning but it fails to put satire on a pedestal and confine sarcasm to the weapon of the wounded and bitter - for me at least. Sarcasm has it's place as a literary device and certainly a place in everyday discourse.

You didn’t explain it very well and sarcasm is a lot more subtle and complex than the one size fits all you stated.

I’m fine with the sarcasm of people I feel I have shared values with, interestingly my perception of the sarcasm of those that hold IMO cunty values, is that it’s a reflection of their cuntiness.

Which is subjective, and will sometimes mean that I miss the cuntiness of those I feel I have shared values with and wrongly label the sarky humour of those I don’t share values with.

On the whole I use the context of the situation, seek clarification if needed, and attempt to see how the recipient of the comment reacts (which is not foolproof as we sometimes defend hurt by appearing to act as if we’re fine with a joke) to try my best not to make assumptions. But also sometimes a quip is just funny.

The issue is we are all different and every minute experiencing different feelings. There’s no black and white on this. And we all have blind spots to our own behaviour too. Even those who genuinely think they are always nice and considerate and never intend to hurt will have said something to someone on here that devastated or upset someone else; they either don’t know or refuse to accept it as to do so feels personally wounding and holding the truth of two paradigms (that I can intend not to upset, and that regardless of this I did upset) is too much.

I’m sarky, insecure, cunty, caring, loving, and all the things.

Also a bit fookin’ patronising.

I’m supportively sarcastic and sarcastically supportive. I don’t think sarcasm is the culprit here I think it’s those that get their kicks by giving others a verbal kicking that whether that be overt or sneakily covert.

I know I’ve said a few things I have later realised were unnecessarily or inadvertently insensitive, trying to be funny or even helpful. However I find it hard to stomach some of the things that do get said. None of those things would I call sarcasm or satire.

I was going by its roots. And as many have expressed afterwards, it demonstrates what I was alluding to, easily confused, misunderstood and as such needs to be tempered by those who use it and say to others who don't understand or are snowflakes to just fuck off.

Sarcasm has moved and is often confused unlike Satire which isn't used near as much.

I can be a sarcastic bastard if I want to be and 90% of forumites don't know how to take me either.
