Are you stuck up if a random person approaches you on the street for a chat, and you don’t want to chat?

Why don’t you want to chat to the random people? Or do you want to?

Nope. For a multitude of reasons. Nobody is obliged to chat. Nice sometimes when you catch someone's eye and exchange a few words over a random situation.. but it's a two way decision. I'd hate some randomer coming up to me out!!

It’s a bit weird and quite invasive. I had a guy talk to me on the train, blurting out words for The Wordscapes game I was playing. Rude.

Women have extra cause to be wary. At least I don’t feel I have to discern nefarious intent. So no, not stuck up.

All depends on the circumstances and who it is.

Unfortunately a lot of people have ulterior motives ie chuggers etc

Had a guy approach me a few weeks ago trying to be extra friendly, happy d*unk but he was trying to steal my watch(using distraction techniques)

It didn't end well for him

Depends on the scenario. Out and about, I assume someone is trying to sell me something.

On a train, at the beach, in a spa... some people are more chatty than others.

I wouldn't instigate but I'd usually engage.

If I’m in a sociable mood then it’s great, if not I smile and turn back to what I’m doing.

If I’m sat somewhere knitting I often get people come upto me and talk to me about what I’m making. If I’m feeling sociable I will knit and enjoy the interaction. If I’m in a grumpy or unsociable mood I will often be using an electronic device and don’t notice other people

Often my shyness could often be mistaken for rudeness. Which held me back a lot because like to talk.

I am so much more confidend and engage people who talk to me with so much more ease. Infact nowadays sometimes I'm the random stranger trying to engage random people in conversation. The fact I can now be that person makes me so proud and confident in my self. So please don't leave me hanging if I ever strike up a conversation with any one of you guys?

It’s an interesting point.

Like if a little old lady started talking to me, I’d end up walking her to her destination carrying her bags.

If a hot person started to talk to me I’d clam up.

If a junkie started to talk to me I’d be making my way out of the conversation sharpish!

I’ve no idea what that makes me though

I had a junkie start stripping off in a bus station because I didn’t have 20p for him I was only about 15 at the time, and he only asked all the younger looking people. Think he thought I’d magically sprout 20p for him if he made me uncomfortable (sorry - off topic!)

if it is a completely random encounter and was sitting on a bench in my own world not really in the mood to engage with any one and some one came and sat next to me and began to strike up a convo it would throw me off and I could be a bit snarky but then something in me always changes my mind because you don't know what sort of frame of the person could be in and soon realise that I should appreciate that person has chosen me to talk to, the person could be suicidal and you/i may be the last face or person they engaged with on earth so I try and give 5 minutes of my time at the end of the 24 hour day what is 5 minutes? you could be making a difference to somebody's life. peace.

By the actual meaning of stuck up then it shouldn't have any bearing on this! Unless someone looked down their nose in a very condescending manner whilst thinking how dare they speak to me ... then surely most people just go about minding their business without the need to communicate or wanting the distraction?

I don't even see it as unfriendly even though I'll smile at anyone

If they say I need an ambulance or ask for directions, fine.

My friends say it's because I have the opposite to resting bitch face, I look way too nice, in fact when we go out out they ban me from smiling in pubs cos they're sick of being stuck with the weirdo sitting with us.

I do it myself sometimes. Had some weird fascinating conversations.

But for every "I hear about someone's childhood" there's more than one "you'd look prettier if you smiled" or "you're so beautiful I want to buy you a drink" (I'm in a hurry go away). I think people need to accept that the strategy may backfire spectacularly.

I'm quite socially awkward and like my own space, I do seem to attract the random chatters though. I like to read or faff around on the forums as a way of decompressing after work, often in public spaces as I want to be around people.

Reading or writing by yourself though should be recognised as the international sign of "fuck off".

It's not stuck up, its just about my head space and managing my mood.

Id echo most of the above, time and a place. If its older people I usually make an effort to chat, Im getting in good practise having an allotment, it is more chatting about bad backs and greenhouses and naughty badgers than it is digging. People who look like they want to sell me something I keep walking without slowing pace. If I dont think I will be stuck with someone for ever I will chat/reply if they instigate something. Oh I always pass the time of day with people, on the street, in the shops. I do wonder if it’s the only conversation some people have and if I can give a bit of time then why not? I have the time and it’s nice to be nice so yes, I do it

I am sometimes incapable of engaging in conversation with strangers, usually when I'm in an autistic shutdown. If someone approaches me I'll smile and make my excuses, I won't be rude, but I don't feel bad about it. It isn't stuck up to not want to chat, sometimes it's a case if self-preservation for people like me.

I don't have social skills in any world.

I’m always having conversations with strangers, yes if it’s someone I don’t feel safe talking too I’ll cut it short but mostly people are nice. And a lot of the special needs young people know me well for the work I’ve done with them so I get a lot chatting to me when I’m out. X

As I've got older I've turned into my mother and frequently chat to randoms in the street.

My kid is generally horrified

People who immediately judge someone as stuck up when they’ve not made the time to know someone or assumed someone should automatically make time for them are probably morons.

I’m often cited as being stuck up which tbh I don’t mind because at least then I tend to surround myself with like minded

I'm terrible (mrs) I'll talk to anyone, my family now have to give me 'the talk' if we're all out together, it drives them mad. My mum was the same and funnily enough as a kid I hated it!

"All about opinions and choices of course, but I never ignore anyone.to give someone two minutes of your day isn’t that hard, they could be having it tough so a quick chat could make their day.

What if I’m having it tough?

You can't be having it tough, you're a good looking woman so must be smiley and sociable "

Wow! You're a quick learner! I'm impressed! Lol Xxx

I'll talk to anyone, or at least listen and let them talk

There are a lot of lonely people out there - a 5 minute natter could mean the world to them

I've had two random convos which really stick in the mind.

One with an old guy who had obvious scarring to his face. He'd been a fighter pilot in WW2 , crashed in Germany, was a POW and when he got back to Britain was one of the first plastic surgery Guinea pigs.

Another was another old guy who'd been a trapeze artist and a wall of death rider in the 1950s.

Brilliant.

"I give off an aura of 'fuck off and leave me alone' so not generally approachable. Even Jehovah's Witnesses think twice before trying to engage with me. But no, I don't see why you should have to chat to random people..

Ooh missionaries approaching me is fun. I know too much. They never do it twice

They are good sport. I totally destroyed one self righteous dick on my doorstep, telling his young son that daddy wouldn't allow him to have a blood transfusion and would rather let him die...They haven't been back

How nice"

I always start with 'No thanks I'm not interested'. If they persist, as most do, then they are fair game..particularly if they call at my door.

like the guy who told Jacob Rees-Moggs son that everyone hates his daddy? Using the kid to score points against the parent"

Hardly the same. Kid should know what his parents think of him.

I often chat to people in all sorts of different places when I'm out. However I don't always feel like it, if that makes me a bad person or socially inadequate so be it

Never understood the correlation of not wanting to speak to a stranger and being stuck up, it’s rather bizarre.

I will speak to anyone & everyone, occasionally though I don’t want to for a variety of reasons, being stuck up isn’t one of them.
